I think that depends on our definition of monogamy - like many Englishman, I am a serial monogamist - I have been married twice* and hope to be so again soon, but I am strictly "one woman at a time".

If I were a Filipino, "serial monogamy" would be impossible, as there is no divorce, so I would presumably have been polygamous in the Filipino manner and I would have had one or maybe even two additional families with mistresses.

On the other hand, thinking about it, whilst my first divorce was partly my fault (don't expect an Englishwoman to live in Asia) the second one most certainly was not my fault. Being married to a woman who is screwing another man and not being able to divorce her and get custody of one's children must be even more unpleasant than divorcing her, even though divorce is always a financial disaster.

* For 17 years each time; there must be a 17 year itch.

I am not a married man; I am a much married man, which is not quite the same thing.

However, I have been told that The Plan is that we will get married next summer. I know better than to attempt to alter any of Kay's Plans once they have been thought through, worked out in detail and Announced, so I will be getting married next summer.

When I proposed to the wife it was on the base in Olongapo by the small church, under a tree that wind chimes tinkling in the breeze on a lovely evening. Her reply to my proposal " Are you drunk?"!!!

We've now seen that "our spot" has a hotel built on it, the wife wants me to propose again so we can have a new spot

Cant speak for all hear blu but for health & safety reasons (like having her finger amputated near home)most of us here dont get involved in such unseemly displays with artificially over priced baubles our families need rice not status a 3 carat at £40,000 would be a seurity nightmare in the Phils

In our case, on the beach at Anvaya Cove. Actually this was a highly stage managed event, which involved consulting the weather forecast, the Nautical Almanac and the staff of the club house (there is a little restaurant right on the beach, and the pretext was dinner with some friends there!)

The detail I got wrong was the ring size - I had consulted her sister, who got it wrong - too large.

I gave her a ring which a pawnbroker will be glad to see in an emergency but which she can wear with the stone turned towards her palm so it looks like a plain wedding ring when she boards a jeepney.

This is true. My wife always said that she never wanted expensive jewelry as the chances are it would get stolen. This happened to her sister on the way back from MOA when a mugger ripped her gold chain from her kneck. My wife rarely took her good mobile phone with her for the same reason and took the cheap one instead, particularly when taking public transport.

I have never had a problem with my ring (it's not 3 carats LOL) but when I am forced to take a cab or walk around dodgy places, I turn the stone onto my palm and close my fist. Never had a problem with it.

I don't really mind people having big carat diamonds, if they can afford it, why not? They didn't buy it using the people's tax money. Let's just be happy that these people have the means to do so. One less hungry mouth to worry about.

I love jewelrey and have been collecting since I was in my teens plus the dowry my mom gave me. I guess it's different for other people.

On the topic of proposals, my then fiance proposed after a boat and horse ride to the crater of the Taal Volcano My first reaction was "are you kidding me?"
