Yes. I have been there. But they don't own the house. They just live there. 9 bedrooms I believe. Or is it 9 bathrooms....one of the two.

My wifes mom is cook, driver and the maids boss. She lives there semipermanently and has a good lifestyle, consequently, as she is virtually part of the family.

My status is working class, Keith. Always will be.

With regards to my wife and her family, considering their background they have done really well. A success story indeed. Because they have spent their lives with a wealthy and highly educated filipino family, a lot of positives have rubbed off on them.

It's good that the family that they are working for is good and treated them like family. It's hard to find good employers nowadays and hard to find good help too.

My family treats our help with kindness but we do get bad eggs too like there was one help that we sent to jail because we were a victim of a dugo dugo gang where she is associated with. My mom lost some cash and about 3-4 really valuable watches.

It works both ways but there is a story behind my wife's mother's connection to her employer. She looked after him when he was at rock bottom and he obviously has never forgotten that. They treat her as part of their family, well almost. And were very good to my wife and even came to our wedding.

The funny thing is that all the ladies she meets in the UK absolutely love her skin colour.
Many white skinned British ladies have commented on wanting her skin colour and that they are very jealous of her for this. They told us that they have to go to tanning salons to look as good as my wife!

^ exactly! Our friends from the UK was tanning like crazy when they visited the Philippines.

That's the thing, we want something that we don't have. This instance, it's skin color.

It seems like people in the Philippines have prejudices about the colour of peoples' skin; something the UK is trying very hard to eradicate, and rightly so in my opinion.

Oh yes it does! There was even TV shows and movies about dark skinned people being teased as ugly and all but when they got whiter, they are now beautiful and well liked.

My family all enjoy messing about in the water - swimming, sailing, Scuba, etc, so everybody gets more or less brown.

Here's my son Charles, who is half Filipino, and his Wicked Stepmother, at Anvaya Cove in Bataan - afterwards he asked me:

"Does Kay have a tan line, Dad?"

"Yes"

"Where?"

"Mind your own business!"

As noted at the head of this thread my only qualification is "good stepfather!"

We've been lucky, our children get on together and with us, so we've gone from two half families to one big one. At a children's Halloween party, two days ago, Kay suddenly missed her phone - Kieran had "borrowed" it and was showing his friends from kindergarten (he's now 5 and goes to "proper school") the pictures - "this is my Daddy, this is my Mummy, this is my Kuya Charles, this is my Kuya Alex..."

Yes, I met his mother when I was working in the Philippines in the early 1990s. His big brother was born in Manila Doctors' Hospital in 1995 and Charles was born in Ipswich General Hospital in the UK in 2002.

Their mother found another Englishman whom she preferred, four years ago, and left them with me. I was not looking for another woman, let alone another Filipina - I was visiting Manila and met Kay, who was "on the rebound" herself. One reason why Kay was willing to date me - an older man with two children - was that she has an English brother-in-law so she had already seen what loyal, courteous and generally admirable husbands Englishmen can be ( !)
