I don't know Mike, I think you have to isolate yourself as much as possible from your loved ones and that would mean extra sanitation measures for shared spaces like the toilet.

They are recommending good ventilation of any room for a person who is self isolating and that makes sense more airborne virus particles will escape to the outside where they will be inactivated pretty quickly.

All fibres seem to degrade viruses but don't quote me on that, so clothes it does not really matter, masks if available are to help prevent you infecting someone else not to stop you being infected by them.

Think about it Surgeons wear masks to stop them infecting the guy or lassie they are in the process of cutting up, they are not trying to protect themselves they are stopping their breath carrying disease to the wide open patient that they just opened up with a scalpel :D

I see that the number of deaths in Philippines has quietly sneaked up to 12.

    https://ncov2019.live/data?fbclid=IwAR0rEGa-32ek4WyFJr3te5CCXplPL40kAY9Zvd19_2mb-s1TC1Oo_94PzmE

I think there could be a problem about to explode there. Apparently lots of people are piling onto buses and getting out of dodge (ie Manila) and going back to their villages to avoid lockdown. This, in itself, will cause spread probably.

They have 140 confirmed cases there, but the number of deaths indicates a lot more than that.

My wife said they're not allowing people over to her island so I wonder what other places are doing the same.
It is easier to do with a small island but less practical as the size of the places people live increases.

I am having a disagreement with my wife.
As my confidence diminishes over time she tells me to stop worrying.

I just want the government to close the schools.

We're probably the opposite. My wife is worrying a lot more than me - partly because she works in a supermarket and has hundreds of people in close contact every day.

Personally I'm not even convinced that we haven't both had this already as we had all the symptoms described a few weeks ago, before it all blew up, and were saying "What the hell IS this illness?". Even Day Nurse didn't work. And Day Nurse ALWAYS work.

We often visit a Chinese supermarket, so... you never know. Maybe we got in early.

Is there a benefit to closing schools, considering school kids have very high resistance to this?

I asked my 16 year old son what he would do if they close the school. He shrugged and said he'd probably go into town with his mates. So is there really a benefit?

Also, as pointed out on TV, if kids are off school then where do they go? It will result in many of them spending the day with Grand parents, who are the higher risk category.

we have both got slight coughs and sniffs..

i was diagnosed with COPD a couple of years back. i was in a pretty bad way with my lungs: violent uncontrollable coughing--day and night. then i remembered 6 years back i had bronchitis very bad--in bed for 3 weeks. doctor came and prescribed prednisolone steroids--and antibiotics--which worked.

so--i asked for this again--18 months ago--cleared me within a week. my doc used the words "a Miracle" !! i literally went from a wheezing coughing wreck to as clear as a bell.
so--i keep what they call a rescue pack--steroids and antibiotics--in case i get a bad attack again. my only real concern is--if i get bad again --and take the course--is will it weaken my immune system ?

as i type this my breathing is easy--no wheezing at all. in fact--its a lovely spring morning.

meanwhile i am self isolating with no close contact with others, except my wife..who runs a care home which is highly likely to be a problem. the management is refusing family visits as from today.

I can understand your points Graham, but I see it differently.

I think we can agree that kids are the biggest spreaders of colds and viruses.
If they go to school and come home, there is a very big risk of spreading this virus to the breadwinner.
Lots of countries have already closed their schools. Why not us?

I think Mums should stay at home and look after them.
Older kids should be encouraged to stay at home for a month or two for the sake of the community - they have so many gadgets at home, surely those things can keep them occupied.
We will all have to make sacrifices for the common good of the nation and that includes the children.

It must be a relief for you to hear about family visits being cancelled.
If we can all lockdown for a month this must help.

If you had a cough that eventually resulted in blocked nose and the cough was eventually a productive cough then you probably have not had it, the signature feature appears to be this dry non productive cough and a very high sudden fever.

I had something similar at the end of January but it would have been un unfeasibly long time from when I travelled through Singapore on the 1st of Jan until when I got sick on the 25th of Jan.

Dr Campbell has been theorising that one reason for the high mortality rate in Iran and possibly in Italy is a high dependence on the use of Steroids and anti inflammatories in cases of respiratory infection, the rational being that fever is the body's way of fighting viral disease and that reducing the fever might actually be counter productive, however this is only a theory you should take whatever medical advice you have been given if you get a similar infection again.

i agree mums should stay at home and look after the kids.

big fat BUT--in the UK many families rely on mums secondary income..and many businesses rely on working mums for staff.

my wifes care home will be in chaos if the working mum staff all stay at home. its like--all of them. but on the other hand if the virus does take up residence in there, there wont be many clients left..so the working mums will all be out of a job anyway. and all this could easily be just weeks away.

Kids don't have high resistance to it, they just don't show symptoms or if they do they are very mild symptoms, they are still getting it.

Because it is a novel virus no one has natural immunity to it.

Strictly speaking no one really knows why kids are protected from this one.

If you close the schools you shut down a large part of the NHS as thousands of staff will have to take time off while the kids are off.
Kid normally are spreader of cold and viruses but as no one has immunity from the virus so anyone can be a super spreader.

My theory is that if it was then it came from the Chinese Supermarket in Reading that we often visit, but it's only a question I'm asking myself. I'm by no means convinced I had it.

The cough went on for about 2 weeks though and was a dry cough, so you never know! It fitted with all the stated symptoms though.

Just learnt today that school nearby has had a young child of 4 test positive.
All families have been advised to self isolate.

I've messaged school requesting confirmation and no confirmation forthcoming,
just what is my connection with school.

There is a possibility that as the child may have been infected prior to showing symptoms,
that the virus may have had a chance to spread over the weekend as not detected?

I have now discovered that the school has only requested self isolation of class members of girl tested positive. The rest of the school is business as usual!
