Been wondering about that. Why do most westerners want to retire in the Philippines when your country can give you better benefits.

I've noticed you reply a lot to your own posts John, do you stop in the street and talk to yourself on occasion? :D

Its a reflection of what people on this forum find interesting. Obviously a lot are interested in politics and religion. But not so interested in the topic of retiring in the Philippines :D Testing the waters.

I try and keep an open mind, Timmers. Some see that as a weakness and try and exploit it. More the fool them.

Quite a good policy in certain places, keeps the street vendors, trike drivers and beggars away.

And those benefits have to be paid for...
    I owe,I owe...Its off to work I go!
There has to be more to life IMO.

My personal standard of living has increased 10 fold since moving here from the UK 8 years ago and life is sooooo good.
Others experience here may vary but that link seems to reflect the general feelings of about every retiree that I know here.. Both young and old.

I have read the piece with interest, and as I said in the past, although respecting other people's views and opinions about the place, I can consider the Philippines as a Holiday destination, rather than a retirement one.
I do admire you lot that have taken the step of actually moving there lock, stock and barrel, but do not envy you one bit.
I thought long and hard about retirement places, and the Philippines Islands don't get a mention in my very short list of possible countries.

Its all about tradeoffs. Swings and roundabouts.

Not all westerners want to retire in the Philippines, Yuna.
I would never retire there or anywhere else in Asia as we have everything we need in the UK.
The UK is so organised compared to many countries and we are happy to bring our children up here :like:

I would like a retirement place, where the colour of my skin, or ethnicity doesn't make me a target for financial exploitation and treat me as a third class citizen because of it.

The Philippines is a great holiday destination if there are not toddlers in tow

In that case you could take advantage of the extended family for baby sitting, as there is never a yaya or ninang more than 6 feet away at any one time..

We won't be going back to my wife's island for some years Dom.
Travelling on buses, jeepneys, tricycles and pumpboats is a nightmare.
We took our little ones two times so my wife's family could see their "mga apo" (grandchildren).
Both times we had to rush them off the island to the hospital on the mainland because of heatstroke.
On the second trip, we even stayed on the mainland for a few weeks to get them acclimatised but it didn't help.
We will return when they are about 8 and 7 when they can enjoy the madness of travel there.
My wife doesn't want to go back "too stressful dear".

Must be lots of space still in Italy Dom for your well deserved retirement..
If anymore of your lot come here to live on our little island I might learn a bit of Italian... At the moment I have to talk to them via their mobile phone translation software as they have zero English..
Must say though the Italian restaurant here is simply amazing.. Not that cheap but I really do not care TBH.
Once we are less busy we will spend a long holiday there in your home country one of these days...For the food,if nothing else!
