Duterte is the son of the Governor of Davao Province.

He has used two family members as stand ins to get round term limits.

That's called "coming from" and "being the head of" a political dynasty.

Are you saying that the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines "manufactured" their Report on the Davao Death Squads?

    Well spotted.
The article was from 2013. I wonder if the cheapskate who gave 20 pesos managed to become a board member.

The numbers are coming in. Partial results show Duterte leading the race with Grace Poe in 2nd, Roxas in 3rd, Binay 4th, and Santiago in 5th.

    VP Marcos 1st, Robredo 2nd, Cayetano 3rd, Escudero 4th, Trillanes 5th, Honasan 6th.

    ...

Like I said. I fear for our country.

So do my family and myself. The true scale of this self inflicted disaster will become clear in the coming months.

I am strongly reminded of what happened in 1998, but if Duterte gets Marcos as his V-P...

Its worth keeping in mind that as Roxas pointed out, the incoming President will get to nominate the entire Supreme Court.

I believe it's only one family member: his daughter Sara who was Davao's Mayor from 2010 to 2013 and is standing for election this year. His son Paolo is the incumbent Deputy Mayor who will almost certainly be re-elected. His younger sister Jocelyn did contest the Mayoralty in 2001 but was defeated.

Its fair to say that the numbers will probably swing a bit towards Roxas as time goes on as his support is stronger in country districts; these very early figures tend to come from Metro Manila which is always anti incumbent.

This will result in a big fuss from the Duterte people but it's what always happens. I still think Duterte and Marcos will win and the consequences will include a weaker Peso.

“A mayor runs for President, gaining support on the basis of being a rough-edged two-fisted goon with a heart of gold, one who’ll exterminate crime, shoot crooks, crush poverty and stand up for the poor. Sorry I’ve seen this movie before: it was called ‘The Erap Estrada Story’ and it sucked.” - Alan Robles.

But yes, I remember that, too. Sadly for the Philippines, most voters in this election do not remember it, because they were children in 1998

    Yup.

The Filipinos have shot themselves in the foot again. Short the Peso.

I`m no Forex trader and I don`t own a crystal ball..
The Peso may slip a little but the facts are that economic growth fundamentals that back it remain pretty damned strong..
I guess it all depends on if this guy really does decide to shock the world in some way... As usual, time alone will tell.

I'm confident in thinking that you meant "man" rather than "chicken"! :D

In any event he's not my man - I'm not enfranchised there - but he does appear so far to be the overwhelming choice of the Philippine people.

As for the Peso, we will see. The possibility of Brexit is having a far more damaging effect on Sterling than a Duterte Presidency on the Peso which has dropped a mere 2 Pesos against the US Dollar over the last month. The BSP keeps the Peso at an artificially high level and has done so throughout the Aquino Presidency. We are most unlikely to see a return to £1 = Php 100.

I meant "manok" - "your chicken". The candidate whom you support . How long have you lived amongst Filipinos?
