The number is growing then. What I suspect is that what really annoys the majority surveyed, is the number of immigrants coming to the country who have no natural ties and taking jobs and claiming benefits to the detriment of those who do. I personally believe that foreign-born spouses of British citizens should be able to migrate to the country quite freely, regardless of their country of origin, and that there should be far stricter controls on EU migrants who have no natural ties.
Its a complex chicken and egg issue even the word "immigrants" has become loaded the only people who can freely work in the UK are European Citizens and there families like Dom, Students paying for there education and working part time and skilled workers not available in the general workforce (im speaking generaly) How do you "take" a job? Surely thats good old capitalism and the free market that decide what level off reward is offered to attract the workers you need? What benifits are workers claiming that is not a direct effect of the free market?
I would have replied with the same ideas that Mark just replied, John. I have paid a lot of money for my wife to come here. She is my family now.
I suppose I am lucky here in the Isle of Man where there is effective protectionism. Immigration from the EU and outside is totally under control. I heard a good radio program on Manx Radio the other day and they are clearly in a similar position of being fully aware of Immigration levels and questioning existing measures in place. The work permit system is the best tool in their armoury and they dont payout to those that arrive here without work. So there is a great deterrent to not come here without work and also preserves jobs for Manx people.
Immigration is the new battlefield in British politics. I see Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson weighed in today also. The Euro elections in May will be a sea change in this country, IMO.
Interesting program. Highlighting the benefits of Immigration to the country and the costs of curbing immigration. Thought provoking. I find the topic of immigration a bit boring these days but I am glad I watched this program.
