yes i contact her today i said i phoned sunday but did not get through, she said had typhoon but not strong like yolanda was but lots rain and wind.
told her get in touch with her cousin [electrician] to see if wiring would be good enough to run shower will not sort it out till there though.
She wants skype me so she can see me, but has no tablet, hinted if i could buy her one, Been looking on phill sites to buy them from Lazad .com a phill site in manila. says they deliver with in 5 to 10 days.
do you think it would get there without any one stealing it.
Camotes tops will ask her sunday when i phone again. Think it will be cheaper to skype than phoning so buying tablet would not be bad thing phoning twice a week even with those cheap numbers is costing £6 to £8 around a week.

Well Frank, there's been no typhoon - it's not the season. However there was low pressure affecting much of the northern half of the country, which would include Panay, and that would have caused some strong winds and rain. That same weather system affected us further south on Tuesday.

If you're considering buying your girlfriend a tablet, I'd recommend getting Cherry Mobile's "Superion Voyager" which has dual-Sim and WiFi and costs P4,999. I wouldn't buy her a more expensive one at this stage. She will need a SmartBro Sim card unless she has access to WiFi. However there is currently a problem with the undersea cables that serve the Philippines and which has affected all internet services here. The problem started a couple of weeks ago and it may take several more before it is fixed and, from a user's point of view, the speed is appallingly slow and isn't sufficient to support streaming video (including Skype video calls) for most of the day. You may be able to conduct such a conversation between the hours of around 4am and 8am Philippine time (8pm to midnight UK time); at any other time, forget it.

There was a typhoon in the Visayas, nothing serious I think.

Frank, I suggest not getting her a tablet YET. You just purchased her a home so don't you think it's too soon to purchase another thing? I am a girl and if a guy lavishes me with so many material things, I tend to get spoiled and it could be rotten LOL.

Is there a internet/computer shop near to where she is? You can schedule Skype sessions there and it won't be as expensive.

    Very sensible advice.

There is ALWAYS an internet cafe quite nearby.

Use Skype to her mobile - it will save a lot compared to regular phone call costs.

That was a Tropical Depression, "Caloy", not a Typhoon. Here's the weather chart for last Monday:
    Caloy.png

Tropical Depressions are nowhere near as serious as Typhoons!

I have known people to use the word "Typhoon", when what they mean is something less, because they don't know the English word "depression"!

Agree with Methersgate, if you google Caloy or read/watch the news, it was referred to as a typhoon. The typical Filipino would refer to it as typhoon as well. Parts of Visayas had a Typhoon Signal 1.

Other options to calling - I use Foo Talk to call my family whenever I am in the UK and it is better than Skype at times.

Thats where Timmers baked beans kick in.

My wife never had baked beans before she came to the UK. I introduced them to her. She likes them but the results were amusing....

Frank, I'm using an iPhone and have Skype and Foo Talk installed and I used it alternately whichever signal works best. You can install Skype on your computer, buy credit and call any mobile or landline number. I believe the rates are much cheaper.

Sorry to ask, what phone did you get her? I mean, that could be the birthday present already.. My husband lavishes me with generous gifts but we are married already and I never take advantage because I'm a proud girl. And I shower him with gifts as well. Just to share, my husband would give me gifts during Valentine's day, my birthday, our anniversary and Christmas. What we do now is he gives me a budget for the year and I can decide what I want to buy and I just choose 1 very big ticket item and I am happy for the whole year :)

Just ask her to go to an internet shop and have your Skype dates :)

Agree with Blue Acid. Do be careful not to overdo the goodies. I am not saying "keep her on a short rein", or anything like that - I an NOT a male chauvinist pig - what I mean is that if you have been very hard up, and suddenly money rains down from the sky, you tend to get a bit silly and do things that don't make for happiness. For example she may feel that its important to show off to people in the village who had looked down their noses at her or her family in the past. Actually, that isn't an important thing to do!

In coming up to four years my list of presents has been two cheap phones, a cheap pad and just now an Ipad, a couple of shopping trips for clothes costing no more that 3K each time and some Marks and Sparks undies (described as "that was a present for you, not for me!" and flowers a few times. For flowers, a fellow member here recommended Island Rose who are reliable and less expensive than most. Oh and an engagement ring....
