There's not much I can add, I'm afraid, neither PLDT nor Smart are being open about the problem - probably their frontline staff don't know themselves. They're getting a lot of flak on their @PLDT_CARES Twitter account.

One thing I do like in the Philippines regarding the giving of presents is the exchange gifts idea at Christmas time, each family member gives one of the other members a present, they don't give a mountain of presents like we do in the UK. Makes for a thrifty Christmas and maybe people actually thinking about the religious meaning of Christmas time instead of counting how many presents they have received.

Blue acid i bought her a samsung galaxy dont ask me which one i am not into mobile phones we bought it in iloilo 12000pesos so think its a good one as the one i have paid around £35 for in England. but its only basic as no signal here so no point having good one i put £10 on and it lasts me all year so you can tell how much i use it.
So can she install skype on her mobile and foo talk? Will do that today get her go cafe i am phoning her at one our time.
She has no job there she did work for her auntie running a store for her but when her husband died she no longer wanted her run it. so she has no money coming in just relies on family
I was going start a small store for her when i was there but bought the house instead.
So this next time will start some business for her so she has an income.

    Good to see a picture!

It does happen sometimes, particularly in country areas. The phone signal is "patchy". We get cut off pretty regularly and just dial back. Its also worthwhile to stop the call and dial again if the signal quality is poor. Nothing to worry about just a part of having a long distance relationship with a Filipina. This is one reason (the other is cost!) why Filipinos text each other more than any other nation in the world! A text will sit in the system and go through eventually, maybe not immediately, but it will usually get there.

Skype to mobile works over the cellphone system at that end so you get charged for a local call, in effect, and its the same as a regular phone call but cheaper.

I used to have a Smart roaming SIM card, which can be texted from the Philippines for just 1 peso per text. So she'd text me on that and I'd reply using Skype SMS.

It seems to be a DNS issue with many western addresses not resolving, speeds are lousy too.

If it's DNS then try setting your Primary DNS to 8.8.4.4 and the Secondary one to 8.8.8.8. However PLDT appears to have fixed the problem with the undersea cable - I'm back to my normal speeds, well for most of the time!
