Yes. I thought about it too. One would have to be sure of being on a "western" style contract with local hardship allowance. And be lucky enough to be able to take a job that cannot be filled by a Filipino.

I mentioned Malampaya. Clearly an impressive set up. But you could wake up in the morning there to find yourself working for your new Chinese employer. The 9 dash line either goes right through the middle of the field or encompasses it. :D LOL

I was thinking of a western type contract too, I certainly could stand one or two years in the Philippines and yes the hardship allowance that wouldn't be too hard for me and you.

This graphic, from the NHS' Fit for Travel site, is a bit more up to date and clearly shows that much of the southern half of Panay is Malarial, apart from IloIlo:

But as I have already mentioned, there's a risk from Dengue. The Philippine Department of Health actively monitors Dengue cases and publishes an interactive map here. The following graphic shows all the confirmed cases in red and reported but unconfirmed cases in white for Panay during the period March 2013 to March 2014:
    Region VI Dengue.png

I discovered today that there are in fact two vectors for Dengue: Dengue-carrying Mosquitos and also Ticks, the latter being more prevalent in rural areas especially around cattle.

Anti-Malarial drugs do NOT prevent Dengue Fever; there is currently no known drug that will do this. DDT-based products such as "Deet" do work but must be applied fairly often as perspiration washes it off. You can also buy small electronic "fobs" which emit high-frequency tones - inaudible to humans and domestic pets - which will deter both Malarial and Dengue Mosquitos. These are designed to be worn by small children for whom sprays such as "Deet" would not be appropriate. National Bookstore - the nationwide chain - often stocks them. But you'll need to keep a good supply of the small lithium batteries it uses (a very common type) as battery life is not very long.

The NHS has a very good description of the symptoms associated with Dengue. If you suspect you have contracted Dengue, you should seek medical attention quickly and hospitalisation is almost always required. There is very little the medical profession can do other than prescribe paracetamol but patients will need a lot of intravenous fluids to combat dehydration which is a hallmark of this disease.

Some Filipinos believe that boiling the leaves of the Camotes vegetable (Sweet Yam) for five minutes and giving the resulting "tea" to a person suffering from Dengue will cure him. There does appear to be some good evidence that this treatment is effective.

Water heater - As a kid, we had this portable water heater wherein we dip it in a bucket of water with the other end plugged in a socket. Takes a little while but works. I believe this is still available in the market and you won't have to worry about amps, water pressure and hiring an electrician.

Also, can I reiterate that it doesn't mean that if you are a foreigner you would have to treat the whole barangay for a meal? It's a nice gesture, yes but it isn't a requirement nor the norm.

Thanks for help good map of mosquito areas looks like where i am not far from Roxas in Estancia is not to bad for malaria and dengue will try those fobs when there National bookstore do they have them in robinsons mall in manila?
Think i will be making that camote tea also just in case do you think having a drink every day would protect us Markham.
Tried them burning repellents while there placed them under me where ever i sat in hotel bars etc. Did work a little but still got bitten.
Looks like getting warm water with the ideas on here will give them a try when i am there, before looking at putting in electric shower ,do not need hot water just warm will do so it dose not take your breth away when you get under.
blue acid take your point do not know if they would have paid for themselves, i just took the bill but no one offered any money so i paid, thought it was maybe same as in Thailand that you pay for all the family if your a foreigner.

This is something similar to what I was referring to, not the same design but I believe the same concept -

I suggest you have malaria shots, my husband had them when he was working in Nigeria. Also, my husband's best friend is Off lotion (spray if it is available) and he has those cute patches that wards off mosquitos.

Maybe not, can't be sure as not all Filipinos are the same. But it seems like a lot of foreigners think that it is something that they have to do either they are with family or friends. My husband treats us once in a while but my mom does too. We have dinner with my family every Saturday and my mom pays. My husband does when it's our birthdays and such.

Whenever I used to go to Philippines, my future wife would avoid doing too much family stuff with me for those very reasons. I asked why we don't see her family much and she just said they'd expect me to pay for everything so it's best to avoid it.

Once she said she didn't want to take me to her uncle's house because then they'd expect a party. When I said a party sounded good she said that I'd have to pay for it - food, drinks, everything. We never went :)

They should have them there, Frank, or you could try one of the up-market baby and children's shops such as "Mothercare" in Mall of Asia.

That "tea" is reputedly good for a number of ailments but has a rather nasty bitter taste. Towards the bottom of that page I linked to in my earlier reply, you see a recipe that includes Lemon Grass and sugar which would likely taste better. However it must be drunk fairly soon after it is made, apparently the trace chemicals that help the body by increasing platelet production do degrade and cease to be effective after a fairly short space of time (6 to 8 hours, I'm told).

If you are prone to being bitten by Mosquitoes, wear long pants and calf-length socks. You can also chew several cloves of fresh garlic which will deter Mosquitoes but, in fairness to your girlfriend, also eat several stalks of fresh Parsley which will neutralise the odour!

You did right, the beer tokens are better in your pocket.

Its always good to pay now and then, its when they start to take the mickey and expect it all the time.

I think another thing we should all remember is that its not just the Philippines that has this little problem, I think we can all look closer to home too. We all know the guy who hangs back when its his round don't we :)

looked at that page blue acid would power be enough to run it also other water heaters looked good free insulation in Manila ,but could take to Estancia get it installed if power is good enough.
Can get electric wire upgraded, but can any one tell me if enough power from wires from road is enough?

Tried that off lotion did not work for me, also as soon as dusk was coming would change into log trouser socks but still got bit. Tried garlic once in Thailand same there in provinces or issan where i went regular all the thais would sit outside in the evening never get bit once me bitten all over think they must like english mans blood.

Markham is those tops same as our sweet potato but called sweet yam?

will see how i go on this time when in phill see if they expect me pay all time,

Tried phone girlfriend then her mother Sunday but said they where out of coverage area is it due to bad weather there that they can not get signal?

Yes it will be sufficient. In addition to upgrading the wiring, you'll probably also need to have a new panel-board (aka 'consumer unit' or 'fuse box') with additional breakers. You'll need a 40amp breaker for each aircon unit and another for your electric shower - and as you'll be in Manila, you can buy your shower heater at any decent hardware store such as True Value, Ace Hardware or Handyman. And I would suggest you buy the 4.5KW model made by AEG (German).

Yes but it's not the Yam that you want, it's the stalk and leaves. Just tell your girlfriend to get some "Camotes Tops" and she should know what you mean!

Cellphones aren't usually affected by rain but reception can be affected if there's a thunderstorm. Other causes include: low battery, phone switched off or that they are on the move and out of range from a cellphone tower.

Send her a text setting up a time when you will call her. Use Phils time (GMT +8 in winter, GMT +7 in summer) as you can't expect her to work out the time difference.

Erm, I don't believe that's true. I can still receive calls even without load on my phone - Smart network. Your preceding points I agree with and second.
