These surgeries are in Hampshire and pretty much adjacent to Isle of Wight.

“New Forest Primary Care Network is a collaborative project involving the following GP Surgeries:

    • Wistaria and Milford Surgeries
    • Chawton House Surgery
    • Lyndhurst Surgery
    • New Forest Medical Group
If you are a patient at one of these surgeries then you live within the New Forest Primary Care Network and can benefit from the services on offer which will hopefully develop even further in the future.”

They have added a section on their site on sauces. Sauces are often made with carby ingredients and even added sugar. This group of NHS surgeries show us how to keep the carbs out of our sauces. Get the Mrs to make you up a packed lunch with low carb sauces added to enjoy on the road if you are stuck on your butt in an HGV cab.

Interesting, I don't really miss bread that much but I do miss rice and I tried Konjac rice recently as it looks more like real rice than cauliflower rice but god it was awful, a gummy jelly horrible texture :D

I buy an orzo and pasta alternative. Actually not bad at all. Konjac rice is awful. It’s quite expensive but we don’t use a lot. Just myself and the Mrs use it in smaller portions about a cup full, maybe once or twice a week with anything that normally goes with pasta for example. We still give the daughter standard wheat based carbs and rice. I explained before that I eat low carb bread rolls made with almond flour. Mrs Ash eats the lower carb Nimble - no good for Keto.

On the subject of children, childhood obesity is running rampant. There are steps being taken that are in the development stages for teams from an unspecified organisation to team up with schools on real food consumption. Might be a couple of years from now.

Can you Drink Alcohol on a Keto Diet?

Yes, you can drink alcohol on keto. But, you need to choose the right low carb alcoholic drinks and enjoy them in moderation.

    Does Alcohol Stop Ketosis?

No, alcohol itself will not kick you out of ketosis. (Alcohol is not sugar and does not spike blood sugar, which is what kicks you out of ketosis.)
However, alcohol reduces utilization of fat to make ketones.
Here is the difference in metabolism on “normal keto” versus when you drink alcohol on keto:
When you follow a keto diet, your body burns fat (from your food and your body) for fuel and produces ketones.
When you drink alcohol on keto, your body sees the alcohol as poison and its first priority is to get rid of it (by metabolising it). So, your body stops breaking down both sugar and fat in order to break down the alcohol instead. That means that any excess sugar or fat is more prone to get stored, in the form of glycogen in the liver (for any trace amounts of sugar) and primarily body fat.

Why Does Keto Lower Alcohol Intolerance?

To understand why you get drunk faster on keto, you need to understand how your liver works (to some extent).
Your liver has many functions, but the ones important for the keto and alcohol consumption include:
Storage of extra glucose (in the form of glycogen) and its release when necessary
Blood detoxification and purification, including the processing of alcohol
When you eat a diet high in carbohydrates, the liver stores plenty of glycogen. The storage and release of glycogen in the liver slows down alcohol metabolism. This is one of the reasons that you often crave carbs when hungover.
When you are in ketosis, the liver stores very little glycogen, and this causes alcohol to be metabolised a lot faster. Therefore, the alcohol will enter your bloodstream more quickly and your alcohol tolerance will be lower.

What Alcohol Can You Drink on Keto?

Spirits – Vodka, rum, tequila, gin, brandy, whisky, etc. Most of these have 0 carbs, which is great, but you need to be careful with what you mix them with.
Dry Wine – Dry red wine, dry white wine, dry rose wine, dry sparkling wine, prosecco, etc - the higher the abv the higher the carbs (in general)
Light Beer – Most light beers are ok in moderation, but check the carbs first.

    What Should You Avoid?

Most mixed drinks – Anything with sugar syrup such as cocktails that you will find in bars and restaurants. Fruit juices and full “fat” soft drinks should be avoided but slimline tonic or Pepsi Max are fine (check the labels)
Sweet wines – Such as Riesling, Moscato, port, sherry, etc.
Liqueurs – These are loaded with sugar and typically made with some kind of syrup. We have a recipe for a low carb Baileys on our facebook page.
Ciders or wine coolers – These are essentially spiked fruit juice.
Sangrias – The wine in them is usually fine, but the added fruit, sugar, and/or juice is not.

Has been described as a cult. This is the noticeboard at an NHS surgery waiting room in Essex. Not only are they advising their patients to restrict carbohydrates but they are having a lot of success with it too. And saving the NHS a bunch of money. If you were a resident in this region this is what the NHS offers routinely. For those patients who have reversed their conditions this is not a cult @oss.
