Worst Year

I am not superstitious but the thirteenth year of a new millennium is one that I would rather forget.

When the new year started I did not know that my fiancee had already married someone else - she never told me. In the past few days I found out she never worked on Siquijor, her house never burned down. She was living the high life throughout our 3.5 year engagement as a 'tourist guide' (prostitute) and living with a series of wealthy customers.

My friend who helped me get over that was caught up in typhoon Haiyan - she and her family are without electric and communications for 3 months. I hope they have food.

12 days ago my house got flooded with virtually all possessions ov value lost including the car. The following day I was rushed to A&E unable to pee. I now have a catheter that leaves me doubling up in pain when I sit down or get cold. I am already seriously disabled by Polio which makes it doubly worse trying to sort out the mess in a house with no heat or light.

I fully expect to have a diagnosis of prostate cancer given my symptoms.

Last week one aunt was taken to hospital following a heart attack. My other aunt died on Friday 13th when I was sat at table 13 in the hotel I am staying in whilst house undergoes repairs.

In just a few days I look and feel like an old man.

Going to the bungalow again today - men coming to empty contents and install drying equipment. All internal walls will be pulled down. All doors will be replaced along with all fitted furniture.

    Times are not easy.

I have had the occasional bad year, but nothing to match that, Howerd.

Here's to 2014. It can only get better from hereon in.

I am sorry that so much misfortune has been dished out in your direction in this past year, but as John says, 2014 is different, and with it it will certainly bring some better times.

Stay as positive as you possibly can, Howerd.
The option of letting everything get you down further will not help you.
Yes, here's to a happy new year for you

I had a catheter put in a few years ago when I was suffering from a diseased gall bladder. The worst bit was having a male nurse remove it. :(

Stay strong! Life is like a ball, whenever you are down, there is no other way but to go up.

I'm a believer of feng shui, mind I ask what month and year you were born? that can give light to all the "bad things" happening to you

The run of bad luck continues. Suspected cryptosporidium infection which means I could have diarrhoea for weeks. Barely able to write and even got my name wrong on sample bottle.

Freezing cold despite 26c and two winter duvets. Lower right leg turning a bit purple cos of feeling cold.

Hospitals won't accept patients with diarrhoea nor will respite care homes. I am still at hotel which is a problem for them and the caravan not yet ready to live in. My flooded bungalow will not be habitable until May.

You have been having awful problems, Howerd.

It is easy for me to say but try your best to stay positive through all of this and look forward to next year.

As an anecdote, I used to have a friend in the USA and when we often greeted each other I used to ask him how he was. He often replied "I'm just happy to be here" or "When I wake up every day it is wonderful". His optimism is still a pointer for me.

Do you have anyone to look after you?

Wish I could feel positive. Although I don't feel nauseous I am whacked out. Just walking a few yards makes me breathless. Cannot keep my balance and have to use wheeled walker all the time. Usually only use wheeled walker outside in icy weather. Left hand shakes uncontrollaby and I cannot do cursive writing - only printing.

My sister has been a big help but her husband has been ill for a year and she cannot take any infection to him as he is immune compromised.

My cousins are preparing a funeral and most others I know locally were also flooded out.

Almost certainly from the flood waters that got into the house.

Now living in a caravan right outside my house. The caravan installers failed to use a GasSafe installer to check the gas system. Result was 2 gas leaks which were found only after I reported a boiler water leak.

The owner of the caravan company suggested I did not use the gas fire for safety reasons. He claimed the electric fan heaters were sufficient!

But there are just 2 fan heaters each rated at 250 watts. 1 in the lounge and 1 in the bedroom. The caravan is 21 feet long.

There is also only 1 gas bottle with no meter. Hardly suitable for winter use.

Wouldn't even know where to start with some positive words of comfort seems you've had a nightmare of a year. Although this year we gave away most of our money for Christmas helping others out here in the Philippines. Different problems but all go with the same of needing to dust off and start again and not let things grind you down.

How I normally deal with it especially at this time of the year is look at the fact that we are leaving this year and 2014 is a fresh start and simply dump all the negative stuff as a year of experience and thank god its 2014. Clean slate, new start.

I would take a look at the legal requirements on the sale of the caravan or if you leased it. As you may find they will have to do more than give a bit of advice.
