The goverment has left the people to fend for themselves. The carities are aparently doing someting but as i've said before I'm not sure what and whatever it is its happening very slowly. Many will be lost, the goverment might spring into action this time but again I think they'll qickly melt into the background and let the charities deal with the aftermath due to a lack of direction and skill in diasater control.

The wife has told me half the village has come to shelter in our half built concrete house that sits on top of a small hill. I'm told they've made a temp roof, out of what I don't know.

You should apply for a Jollibee franchise.

Latest reports have it strengthening and in western Samar storm surge of 2.5-3.7m can be expected. To be honest it doesn't really make alot of odds now where it tracks (unless it swings rapidly north) because its going to cause a great deal of damage, a lot of people will probably die, alot of people will get displaced and they will have to start from level one again but this time it'll be worse because they've made hardly any really headway since last year in actually trying to get eople into any sort of substantual housing or shelter.

Obviously I hope that the affects will be less than I'm predicting but I just can't see it somehow

We're still waiting for the insurance to settle for last years typhoon for our house in Tacloban. Looks like its gonna happen all over again. Our place is of brick and concrete construction, only weak point last year was the roof got blown off, otherwise the house held up quite well.

Pagasa is now predicting 4 to 5.5 metres (13 - 18 feet) storm surge throughout the eastern Visayas and Bicol. Rainfall will be up to 200 mm (~9¾ inches) per hour for those areas and up to 150 mm (~7¼ inches) an hour over Cebu and Negros. The only good thing to be said about "Ruby" is that it is not forecast to be as devastatingly powerful as "Yolanda" was.

But let's look on the bright side. The authorities on Samar and Leyte should already have two top-of-the-range JCB "earth-movers" (and a fleet of Land Rover Discoverys) left-over and unused that were flown-in by the RAF last year. Or do they?

Ha that stuff will be long gone. There are a lot of very clean SUV's that the charities use. Latest reports is that is weakened to a cat 3 and the expected storm surge levels (in our area on the west) have decreased by about a meter. Main concern is high tide on sunday about midday that will be affected by prevailing winds, SW'ly for the exposed west coast areas (Catbolgan etc for those on the northern sides of bays). I think the wife's province will be ok as we are on the south side of the bay and the wind won't have any really affect on seal evel there, hopefully

Elsa just spoke to Nanay in San Juanico in Tacloban, it seems everything seems normal, more like a bad storm as opposed to a typhoon, so thats a relief.

I've stayed in the Red Coconut before, that's a big surge that is showing just now, couple of metres at least, the swimming pool will be flooding already as will a lot of the rooms in the bit at the back.

The Coconut is just 'ok' by the way, nothing special.

edit: looking again it's probably not up to the pool and rooms yet, but it could be :(

When I looked at the earlier projections that you guys posted here it did look like the epicentre was going straight through Boracay.
