question for Oss--often when i try to use photos the site says the files are too large. I dont know how to reduce in size--other than cropping--but sometimes thats too drastic. Any suggestions ?

I don’t know anything about model railways. My employers PA’s late father did. His collection was worth a fortune. They got one of the big auction houses down south to sell it nice he had gone. Apparently he bought a piece for his collection every month and built up a huge collection. She was amazed at its worth,

Same happened with me but there is the option to choose a smaller file size. It took me a while to realise that.

some of my locos are made on the isle of Man--Union Mills models. Its a one man operation--limited production--typically costing £80--£90 each. Often go for 3 times that price on ebay when out of stock.

Yeah we don't have a lot of space and the Xenforo system limits the size of clips that can be uploaded.

The Amazon clip on the other thread this evening was a case where I just dumped a screen grab into the site but usually I am uploading images to my online space in Flickr and just providing a link on the site, that way the site does not host the pictures.

The problem is my Flickr hosting costs me money so you might be better looking at Google or somewhere else for free hosting of images that you can link to.

You are finding an image on your computer and probably copying and pasting into the editor, the site then says "Nah too big" because it has to store it at the other end on the web server where the site lives.

I get a link like this from my Flickr account (www.flickr.com)

    Code:
    https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51489353018_449d52699d_n.jpg
    then I add the
    Code:
    [img] and [/img]
tags either end of the link, the site then treats that as a reference and goes and gets the picture from Flickr and not from british-filipino.

    Code:
    [img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51489353018_449d52699d_n.jpg[/img]

Dropbox do a basic free account with 2GB of storage but not sure they have the easiest link sharing mechanism, I'm not that familiar with other hosts because I've always paid for Flickr.

I wish I knew his name. I know her married name. He wrote books on it.

I will ask her if you want. Strangely, he lived in the Union Mills area. I probably don’t know the half of it and neither did she. She just said he was an Engineer by trade and had a huge collection in his attic. She being a female didn’t take a lot of notice of it.

I saw your removed message, sometimes the link takes time to get the image especially if it has just been uploaded and is quite large, I saw the pic quickly.

Once someone has viewed a page with an image like this the picture is then cached locally on their own PC so the next time they view that page it does not go to the internet to get a new copy, that way the viewing and page loading is much much faster, but once in a while the browser will go and ask for a new copy from Dropbox or Flickr or other such services.

    That's beautifully detailed!

I take it the houses in the background are real and outside the window :) they were such a perfect backdrop that I thought they were part of your models :D

Really cool, makes me very nostalgic for times gone by.
