Hello, For anyome who is interested in this wonderful sport, here is a nice video to kick this thread off. Safety is the most important thing to consider to fully enjoy your time in the water: There is advice and sone nice underwater footage:
After training, it is mostly very relaxing, Malcolm. It is never too late if you do travel overseas one day, but I know you're not keen on travelling.
i knew back then--40 years ago--i would regret not going for it. I am a water baby. But life got in the way.
I was with the BSAC in the 70's did some dives in bizarre places. My first ever dive was a night dive in West Germany an old quarry filled with water. Then we did a dive in the Baltic sea, a bit cold I remember loads of jelly fish and swimming through them my dive buddy got his knife out and tried slashing them lol. My most bizarre dive was in the Liverpool docks that was cold too. Also did a dive in a Scottish lock diving in a shipwreck think it was a German ship scuppered. My favorite dives were in France, 3 weeks in the mountains then 3 weeks in the med south France. I also did a free dive without scuba gear 50ft down That was when I was fit can only do 10 ft now lol. My worst moment when I did my last dive where the Royal Marines and Navy use to train not sure it's there now. The day before the dive We got put in a decompression chamber and I had problems equalizing my ears I'm sure I did rupture one of my ears, when I did the last dive I felt pain in my right ear so came out and that was my end of diving days. Got back home and the Dr said I had ruptured my right ear. Had my ear repaired but can't take a chance diving again, only snorkeling ,I go every week to the same place near Mike's Apo Island. A great place to learn to dive by experience PADI divers. British Sub-Aqua Club: Home
For someone who has never tried Scuba (Self-contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving, have a look at this: PADI is an American company (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) that seems to be the most popular organisation around the world. https://www.padi.com In the UK, BSAC is the main organisation to contact if you're interested: Home - British Sub-Aqua Club (bsac.com) I did my open water course then an advanced diving course afterwards in the 1980's (both in Phuket, Thailand). I wanted to learn to dive in warm water and see colourful marine life at the same time. I have now done many hundreds of dives in many locations around the world. I decided not to become a dive master then become a dive instructor as I wanted to spend my money on dives only. I didn't want diving to be like a job. I have so much experience now and am often asked to help the dive masters when I am out in a group of divers. Scuba diving caused me to meet my lovely wife as I went to Malapascua island off the north tip of Cebu island. I went there to dive with thresher sharks which was ok. These sharks with their very long tails were very impressive but the reef was not so impressive itself. My diving mostly stopped when my wife and I had children. I still keep an interest in diving and will go again one day when the airfares come back down to an acceptable cost for my family of four travelling to the Philippines. Fingers crossed as I miss diving very much. I hope my children will dive in their lives, their connection to the Philippines will hopefully allow them to get their fins wet
Yes, John, I heard this bad news on the car radio this morning. The three who died decided not to dive and all the others were having a "dive brief" ner the stern of the boat, so they could easily be taken off quickly by rigid inflatable boats (rib). Such a tragic loss of three lives
Yeah yeah I thought you were all for thread diversification, which you have demonstrated previously. Oh I missed the point you want to pose on this one
