    See article
An NHS nurse is unable to return to London after a car crash in the Philippines left her paralysed and £20,000 in medical debt.

Candice Montefalcon, a 33-year-old A&E nurse at Northwick Park Hospital near Harrow, had her world turned upside down after a car she was in was hit by a coach and overturned.

Ms Montefalcon, her partner Silvino Poe Bueza, her two children and her brother and sister were in the car travelling to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Manila, to catch a domestic flight to the Filipino province Pangasinan.

I suppose she is a Filipno

"The family – who forgot to take out holiday insurance - were faced with hospital bills amounting to £20,000, meaning they were unable to pay for a flight back to the UK."

    1.3 million peso.

Filipino's are not the only ones silly enough not to have Travel Insurance, plenty of Brits are equally silly.

However there is the trust in god that nothing will happen to you, bad things only happen to other people and that wild optimism is not exclusive to Filipino's but it is very prevalent in Filipino culture.

I spent part of Sunday trying to convince my daughter that she should get home contents insurance, she rents, her mother has never had home contents insurance, she thinks she has nothing worth losing but in even a few seconds we could total up several thousand pounds worth, my daughter does not buy generic low end stuff she saves to buy the best in the hope that it will last but is willing to expose herself to future misery just to save £100, I need to ask her about her travel insurance I bet she does not buy that either.

Larry you probably didn't intend this as a counter to the point about the Nigerian woman who ran up a £500,000 care bill for her babies being born prematurely in the UK but it is a good counter argument this happens everywhere.

My thoughts are with this poor woman and her loved ones.

( Bear in mind. This is something that could happen to any of us )

It cost me an arm-and-a-leg last year to get insurance for high altitude Himalayan trekking, extra because it was above 4000 metres, also dangerous sport insurance for paramotoring in Thailand, each and every year theres stories of stupid people who don't take out insurance, come a cropper, and rely on others via go-fund-me to bail them out.

One of the articles comments is interesting...
Whilst wishing her a speedy recovery i do wonder is she not already in her home country? And if she was allowed back into the UK who would pay for her medical care etc etc

    Travel insurance always.........
I pay extra for pre-existing health conditions.

When I drive on the continent, on the way to Italy, I also take the AA super duper 5****** recovery https://www.theaa.com/european-breakdown-cover/

I can always save a few bob in other aspects of life in general, but on travel peace of mind, I splash out.

Reality is she lives and works here.

As a resident and taxpayer she is entitled to NHS treatment. She will be either British citizen, on ILR or on FLR and under all of those will have paid relevant surcharges so more than entitled to NHS treatment.

Edit: NHS does not pay for repatriation but same rules apply to British citizens and residents. So has to fund return herself which is why I always have travel insurance covering medical and repatriation

She could equally be on a Tier 2 Visa which, AFAIK, does permit free treatment under the NHS after (maybe) a fairly short qualifying period.

She certainly sounds like a more deserving case than the thousands of drunken British morons who clog up the A and E departments every day... often assaulting staff too.

So sad to hear her situation. I pray for her speed recovery. Can anyone here suggest reliable travel insurance covering Europe trip or Philippines?

Actually, i already have Zurich which i took while i was still single. But i want to have travel insurnce for us as couple. I don't have any idea how much it cost in UK? My husband also is not keen about insurance.

Worldwide cover (excluding the USA and a couple of other places) is for me £100 for an annual policy from LV (Liverpool Victoria Insurance) I am a single traveller.

If you use a comparison website you can check the rating of most providers by looking for the Defaqto rating section which will show 0 to 5 stars, you never really know how good a company is until you have to make a claim but the Defaqto rating give me a little bit of confidence, and for me LV generally get fairly good reviews as being one of the fairer companies out there.
