Showing: MONDAY 9pm - 10:35pm Channel 4 "This follow-up documentary to Make Bradford British is filmed in one of the nation's most ethnically diverse cities. It brings together eight Leicester residents, four of them British citizens from various backgrounds and ethnicities, plus three recent migrants from Central and Eastern Europe and one from Somalia. They spend time together to explore their feelings about immigration and what being British means to them." http://www.channel4.com/programmes/make-leicester-british
A must watch program for those interested in or concerned with immigration. I first visited Leicester in 1975. I spent 3 years there while at university and a further year after that before moving further out into the shire for a few years. Even in those days it was a great place for a curry. I missed out on a reunion there just a few months back. The "lads"had a tour of the university campus, had a game of football and visited Richard III s resting place.
Leicester, not the finest place in our land that's for sure, and I believe it is the only city in the UK where immigrants outnumber British people, might be wrong but I think I read that somewhere. Should be a fun programme to watch, hope I get the chance to watch it.
Just looked that up. The figure isn't based on immigrants. It's based on white British. The link I found (from Telegraph) says Leicester is 45 per cent white British. So that doesn't include non white British people, which would include, if I were in Leicester, my own kids. Yet my on kids are proper British kids as far as I can see. They were born here. They've always lived here. So it's a bit misleading. I worked in Leicester for a couple of weeks once. The office I worked in was very multi cultural. I thought it was nice actually.
Yes. The demographics were pretty obvious back then in '75. I forget the statistical split of the day. Interestingly, I have visited Houston, Texas, about half a dozen times and the number of white Americans are in a minority. The balance is made up of Mexicans and Black Americans. Great Tex Mex food to be had there.
There was a program on TV last night on British Asians. The interviewer asked if they felt British. If you closed your eyes and listened you would not have known they were Asian in origin. One guy had fought in the British Army but strangely said he still didnt feel British.
Yes. Interesting to hear the various viewpoints. I lived in both Leicester and Manchester, both multicultural cities, for a total of 30 years. But now I live here the demographics are quite different. Its quite hard to get a curry here. And the most prevalent Asian immigrant here, by far, is Filipino.
I was in Leicester on Monday just gone, both there and derby are my closest cities and I've been going to them for years. To be honest I don't know what all the fuss is about. Yes there is a large number of Asians in both cities and well I dare say quite a few from other races. Cities have always been multi-cultural as it where new migrants tend to flood too. The plus side is the number of markets in Leicester where my wife can get a lot of her fruit and veg. Can't see a problem with it to be honest as long as the councils remember they are in a city in the UK and should be governed as such which seems to be the underlying current with a lot of these programs / articles
There used to be ( in the mid 70s ) a fantastic fruit and vedge market in the town centre. Huge. I kind of imagine it might not be there now?
I think Gary Lineker was in short trousers when I was there in the mid seventies or just bursting onto the scene. I went to see Leicester City play a couple of times. Filbert Street. My cousin had a game their for QPR reserves. Long time ago though. I recall a record shop called Revolver. They started of with a market stall and then opened a shop. I bought a fair few albums there.
