Very few mammals John as they are all stuck in the pot as soon as they are spotted, i have seen one deer on Mindanao back in the 1990's.Lots of reptiles however, and if you can take some binoculars, some quite colourful birds, and a good place for butterflies and moths.

A lot of Japanese collectors go to palawan and Mindanao for the butterflies, I set a mercury vapour bulb and sheet up one night which attracted a ridiculous amount of insects.

In my view this is completely irrelevant and has little to do with the price of cheese??? perhaps you can enlighten me and tell me why this is important? the original way for Foreigners to meet was a kind of mail order catalogue way before internet communication this was called, Cherry Blossom.

DAVE--i do enjoy reading what you have to say....but can i ask you to punctuate with more paragraphs--please---because long slabs of texts just merge into a blur--and are difficult to read.

or perhaps i'm just pissed as usual.

Any chance you could recommend a good insect book for identification purposes. I already have a contact over there to send photos for ID

I didn't have any books Alan, I had a friend from the DENR who was adept at ID'ing butterflies and moths. I found quite a few mantis etc over the years, I am certain you will bump into all sorts of creatures in your time there :)

Alan you are now telling us you are 69yrs of age and you talk of this young woman, but you never did mention her age, your suggestion of her being young does that mean she is perhaps 50years your junior or something very close to this, maybe you are already registered on a sex offenders list here in UK? I do understand human nature and this kind of dictates to us we men should be shagging women of child bearing age, however we are no longer cave men and have the ability to make an informed choice, myself having a moral compass this is a sad story to me.

Also bridal agencies, I remember going into one near Ermita when I was about 19 or so, not for myself but with a middle-aged british guy I had met on the flight from Hong Kong.

    Let's be hypothetical, Alan:
You don't know your new partner very well at the moment and you are hoping she will be perfect for you.
When romance has lasted a while and you are both very fond of each other and in love, she will use all her feminine ways to let you know how unfulfilled she is not having children.
Filipinas have many ways to make a man feel good.
If you both want this, a little one will come along and she will forget childbirth pains in a couple of years and want a second one.
As we all know babies cost a lot of money and you may want to have an operation to have your tube cut.
In my life I have seen couples split up almost overnight when the man cannot or will not make the woman pregnant. It happens.
She may be a woman who doesn't want children so it could be easier for you but when you visit the Philippines and see how much women love babies you will see what I mean.
    It's a minefield but it's life :eek::D
When I met my wife over there, we had a talk in the early days about babies and she said she would love to have a baby with white skin.
I said "what happens if I have to leave you or we split up" and without a second thought she said "it is no problem as long as I have a white-skinned baby". You could have knocked me down with a feather o_O:lol:

I'm with you all the way on the need to have medical insurance over there, especially as we get older.
If I was rich, I would go over there soon and feel safe in the knowledge that money can buy good medical treatment in a good hospital in a city.
A lot of Filipinos are one short step away from destitution when an illness or a bad injury strikes.

Everyone has a story to tell.
Most of the sad and dramatic ones are told in so called "expat bars"!
Most long termers here seem to be ex US Forces. If they saw any action in any world conflict such as Afghanistan or Iraqi, then a 3000 to 6000 $$ monthly pension is not unusual.
They may get ripped off from time to time or perhaps the wife or GF over spends occasionally but its not a big issue as another big check will be issued at the end of the month.
The biggest dramas occur after younger or middle aged men come here to meet a girls face that they met somewhere on the internet.
Many of them come for a month or 2 ,fall in love with the relaxed lifestyle, walk into an "expat bar" where they discover a bar full of wisdom and knowledge and then they want to live the good life, like their new drinking buddies!
6 months later there are pictures of them broke and living in the local Purok bamboo shack on Face book.
The smart ones manage to limp back to their home countries before they are financially wiped out, lick their wounds and get back to real life and reality.
