I take it you didn't bother to read any of the comments: "Nothing, it says lots about the editorial priorities of Al Jazeera. The "killer claims are out of context, yes he warned there would be severe consequences for those who persisted in corruption once he became president. No proof has ever been produced re: death squads etc. Duterte has provided services such as rehab facilities for drug addicts, they can choose rehab or jail. he has provided 911 services and turned the city of Davao into the safest and most peaceful in the Philippines. Such services, provided free are unheard of in the rest of the Philippines. Many dislike Duterte because of his stand against superpowers that exploit the resources of the Philippines and workforce and use the Philippines to pursue geo-political advantage. Hence the negative tone from those who would love the country to remain corrupt."

Right. I am going to bow-out of this discussion because it is becoming ridiculous. You've made nine consecutive posts followed by a run of five in this thread; you are obviously obsessed with Duterte and have spent the last few weeks making negative post after negative post about him. We all know that you dislike him and that you support Roxas; you've told us often enough. This obsession is consuming you with the result that you're making this a personal matter.

If you want to behave like JohnAsh, make snide remarks, be rude to and attack those you disagree with, that's a game you can play on your own. I am not interested.

Journalists, make enemies from all walks of life.
I suppose that in the Philippines is much easier to make enemies for various reasons, but mainly for writing the wrong thing about anyone, and it is ever so much easier to find someone willing to kill a person for a few piso...
I believe that life is cheap in Phil....... very cheap...........
So, in my view, without any proof, one cannot accuse Duterte of anything, but just boasting......

Did everyone get out the bed the wrong side or something?

    Guardian article now says:

"..3m pesos (£44,000) would be paid.."

Everyone here knows the value of the peso.

Who cares whether there was a misprint in the past that's been corrected, or not?

Move on for Gods sake. I'm getting bored of all these political discussions that generate hot air and not light.

Admittedly, he isn't doing much to endear himself to a section of society that seems to be easily shocked and wound up by what seems to be "lower class" by reason of bombastic brashness and machismo at its most offending.

Some strange people's train of thought..
If it doesn't fit the mould then it should not be considered as worthy of the Office...

Yes, Jim, the Guardian has edited that page to correct the Sterling value since I copy-pasted my quotation from it yesterday morning. As evidence of which, the following comment is appended to the story:

Whatever we say and think here has no effect on what will happen in the Philippines.
We do like to keep our eyes open though as all of us here have a connection to there.

I used to visit a lot but UK schooling changed everything....:(

He actually didn't say they had to be killed.
His exact words where 'Suspects who put up resistance during their arrest would be killed; while those who raise their hands in surrender would be spared"

Why are you so obsessed with this guy? He is unafraid to say things that many may think - that the UN is pretty useless as an institution. It has failed to bring about peaceful solutions to the many conflicts that have blighted the African continent since the end of the last war; failed to get a proper peace settlement in Palestine; failed in the Ukraine, failed in Yugoslavia, failed in Iraq (twice), failed in Syria, failed in Libya and failing in Europe. And, by the way, the EU isn't any better!
