Why, oh why when Vista goes wrong, it screws up big time? :erm:

For some bizarre reason my laptop is now taking 8 minutes plus to start up, when before it was only 25 seconds tops. I've made no configuration changes, no viruses, no malware, no spyware, no new software, no new hardware, no new updates, run a full disk check, scanned for bad sectors, full virus check, file check, all windows updates installed, everything. I've had enough, Vista is going, I've already downloaded Ubuntu 10.10, about to install it, then sometime next month when I get some money, I'll put Windows 7 on instead.

Is it consistent? Sometimes it takes forever because it's installing some junk from Microsoft?

7 is better but is not a cure all, Ubuntu is very good.

Windows 7 is technically way superior to Windows XP but if I was not dependant on Windows for making a living I would probably switch to Linux and specifically Ubuntu. I tried an Ubuntu distro last year on a second hand laptop I think the distro was 10.04 not sure but I was very very impressed both with the user interface and the performance on old hardware, I was running it on an old IBM T43 laptop it was great.

I've used Unix off and on over the last twenty two years even written some code for a Unix system back in the early 90's but Windows was always more developer friendly, that's why Microsoft is as big as it is, it won the loyalty of the devs.

Linux is finally at the point where you rarely have to access the command line and software installation is no longer a nightmare but it's not always plain sailing and when you do have to start issuing commands at a shell prompt it gets pretty hairy for the uninitiated pretty quick :D

    Yep, it was consistent.

Using Ubuntu 10.10 now, and its surprisingly easy and hassle free compared to other Ubuntu Distro's I've used in the past. Had a brief issue with wireless network, but that was down to my laptop have a stupid quirk of having to manually start wireless networking on every system start. Nice to see the Ubuntu people have included necessary stuff in this release like Flash, Firefox, etc pre-installed rather than go hunting for it. The software centre has 1000's of applications, including Adobe Reader, Chrome, Gimp and Skype.

Start up time in Ubuntu 10.10 is down to 15 seconds, and shut down less than 2 seconds. Nice.

Expensive, paid for, Microsoft operating system broken, prospect of going rapidly bald trying to fix it. [IMG]

Completely free operating system that works really quick on old computers and blindingly quick on new ones now installed by Rob and working perfectly with no hassles. So Rob is now [IMG] [IMG]

I would have done, except I don't fancy wasting time removing the crap that comes with re-installing, besides the many hours of windows updates, service packs, restarts, configuration changes. Vista came with so much rubbish as part of the re-install recovery procedure - AOL, Tiscali, Norman AV, Google, Adobe Air, etc, all put there by the manufacturer. Norman AV has to be worse paid for AntiVirus product, I did try it out a while ago when the lappy was new, it wouldn't update for starters and then it went all mardy on me.

I get weary of rebuilds these days too, by the time I have installed all the tools I need for development, all the OS patches, tool patches, all my photographic tools and so on about 2 days have passed.

Saying that, it takes a good bit of time installing a development system on Linux as well but for a communications device, basic web browsing, email, skype, yahoo and other IM's bit of word processing Linux is hard to beat these days.

And it's got pretty wallpapers :D
