Initial impressions of Windows 8 seem to suggest that it's going to be another ME/Vista cock-up. As a desktop user, I can't see anything in it for me over Windows 7. I'm not really clear who it's supposed to be aimed at (tablet users?).

Linux is becoming very usable these days, if the programming environments were better I would be tempted to use it more often although Eclipse is very very good these days it has to be said, personally I had a couple of laptop drives dedicated to Ubuntu a while and I have a few Linux Virtual machines kicking around too.

It will be a flop with business, the departure from the desktop environment would be a disaster for most business applications, the programming future is not clear and the tooling is lacking, it is a panic reaction to the fact that ordinary punters only ever use the web, email, social networks, music, video and games and you can do all of that on a tablet which means Microsoft is sidelined, however it ain't so easy to do a days work on a tablet.

They are just terrified of all those home end users no longer giving a hoot about desktop or laptop computers and thus all those copies of MS Office and Windows that won't get automatically shipped on every device.

Linux started the netbook bandwagon but Microsoft and Intel did everything they could to kill that trend off very quickly and they succeeded, they will not find it as easy with Android and IOS.

Saying all that the Metro Interface on the phone is very very very nice indeed and I have had both an iPhone (which I ditched) and many Windows mobile and now Windows Phone 7 phones. I like Metro, I just don't think it has a place on the desktop at least not yet, time will tell.
