I've just noticed that, what a fantastic idea. I talk to Cortana as well, but sometimes she tells me to 'shut up you stupid inbred Welsh person' New technology is amazing isn't it (whoops another Welsh-ism there)
Yeah Microsoft are back and finally explaining what their guys want to do, my side of it is hard to explain as the movements in the business world are quite subtle but I really mean it when I say the changes to .net are revolutionary, they have a chance to come back even in the mobile arena!
Also, if you want to ask any question, all you need is WIN + S (S for search) and start typing, Corti will answer you or if she can't she will give you Bing and Bing ain't that bad
Unlike previous OS from Microsoft, W10 is a walk in the park to upgrade to. Past OS like Vista was a massive memory hog and requiring a lot of HD space to install, W7 rebalanced that somewhat, but W8 was a right mess and MS got burned. W10 makes up for this, they've been very careful with one, put a lot of effort into it, and it shows. The only possible problem with W10 is, as Mark pointed out, is the overreliance on the web, aka web-centric.
Have you had any issues with your TP graphics in W10? Sometimes I'll get a brief screen blackout, like the driver has failed, but then it carries on as normal. Its only happened a couple of times, so I'm guessing it could be graphic driver updates.
On startup I get blue dots in a grid pattern over the default desktop background, it starts from about 1 inch from the top of the screen, if I click on task view, the window repaints correctly and I never get any further problem during that session. On the X220 the graphics are just the standard integrated Intel HD3000, but yours might be Nvidia?
This is for Windows phone but I guess it will be the same on Windows. http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/how-to/wp8/cortana/cortana-and-my-privacy-faq
Microsoft has a 35 page privacy policy I believe. Privacy settings are easily reached in Windows 10 - just go to settings and then Privacy.
If Cortana listens to everything you say, how many other people are listening in. Point of note: (W7 laptop) My webcam is taped over. Should I also disable my microphone?
As far as I can see, you can only voice search using a dedicated microphone button on the Cortana toolbar. Even I would not welcome a full time voice search, that's just taking things too far.
Intel here also, seems to have settled down now so I can only assume its display driver being updated.
On Windows Phone Cortana requires hardware support to be able to listen for the 'Hey Cortana' trigger, that only exists on specific phones my Nokia 1020 does not support it. Saying that I did see Joe Belifore demo Windows 10 desktop 'Hey Cortana' but I think again some special set up is required as my ThinkPad certainly does not allow this at this point in time. I usually only see that happen during boot just before the desktop shell appears, but I would think you are right that it is an update of some kind.
When you upgrade a PC to Windows 10, all the pictures stored in your 'My Pictures' folder are automatically made into a slideshow screen saver. Not a problem for most except that if your entire collection of naughty pics gets seen by your wife when she switches on your PC ...... as reported by the Daily Mail today. Far more serious is the revelation that Windows 10 directly threatens users' personal security. Within 45 pages of terms and conditions, the privacy information suggests Microsoft begins watching from when an account is created, saving customer’s basic information, passwords and credit card details, Newsweek reported. Microsoft is also said to save Bing search queries and conversations with Cortana, as well as lists of which websites and apps users visit and the contents of private emails and files, as well as their handwriting. The privacy statement says: "your typed and handwritten words are collected." Microsoft says that data is collected to provide users with a more personalised service and better character recognition, for example, but may also be used for targeted advertising, meaning it may share information with third parties. More here, here and here.
Microsoft's Windows 10 End-User License Agreement also states: "We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary." Necessary to whom? In so doing, Microsoft may be acting contrary to Section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and is relying on its EULA to claim that it has your permission to access your computer. I'll continue using Windows 7 until its lack of updates render it insecure and then switch to Linux.
The American government presumably or at the request of our government I would guess. Not going to stop me using Windows 10 or any other Microsoft product.
Windows 10 won't be a big deal here in the Philippines. At least in the case of most businesses (unless you're in IT company specifically) and the general public. I had once work for a company that develops supply chain and HR software. I was in Business Development. Funny thing is, our office still used Windows 2003. That was back in 2013, so 10 year gap already. My company said that it's unnecessary cost to upgrade all our OS, when the things that we need are only the basics. MS Office, CSS, etcera. Personally, I'm not really ecstatic about Windows 10. I mean all I do is use MS Office, Chrome and play games anyway. I'll get the Windows 10 built-in when I buy a new laptop.
Apparently ThinkPad owners are having a lot of problems with NVidia graphics drivers which is a pity as my older W500 and T61 machines all use discrete graphics for performance reasons. Indeed all NVidia users are suffering
