    oss, I did hear on the radio earlier today that the phases of the moon could possibly have an influence on earthquake as it causes stresses and 'tides' on the earth's crust. Whoever this person was said he would be studying further on this to see if it was a significant influence.
    Seriously oss, what do you think?

    again... wow! I never dreamed of getting a degree on Math or Physics or anything that has to do with math... I soooo hate math! :D :eek::boxer::lol::lol:

    Yes that's true the moon moves a vast quantity of water every day and that does put regular stress and pressure on the sea floor, interestingly I do know of a scientist who has had great accuracy in predicting large quakes based upon his studies of varying gravity in the earth moon system, sure it was just last year I watched a Documentary about that. He also predicted the Sumatra quake in 2004 his work has some merit although he has not yet got past peer review as there are still a lot of sceptics.

    Yes the moon's orbit while it is nearly circular is actually slightly elliptic and does vary over time, I wrote a spreadsheet program in 1987, for fun, that calculated the earth moon orbit radius at any time since 4713BC (I think) and any time up to 20,000 years from now, I was just getting into computing at the time :D

    oss, maybe this was the same bloke. I heard it on Radio Northampton this morning but missed the last bit.
    Fascinating stuff, as he was convinced he could offer accurate predictions based upon his own studies, data and computer program.

    Well, right now we will all be thinking of our loved ones in Pinas. I am thankful that my mahal should be clear of any tsunami if it hits. Though after just watching some video taken from Japanese TV news, I have to say how sorry I feel for the Japanese right now:(

    Salamat, luckily computing has very little to do with maths you only need to understand a bit of boolean algebra and the rest is just having a knack for the subject :D

    if you understand Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT you can write computer programs for example a little ditty I was working on today as an example for some colleagues overseas :D

    Those "if" statements have both "&&" which is AND "||" which is OR dont have a NOT example there :)

    The thing I was really good at as a kid was technical drawing and computing requires the same kind of ability to visualise and imagine things in your head.

    HTML:
            private void connectButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
            {
                String connectionUri;
                String host = hostTextBox.Text.Trim();
                String port = portTextBox.Text.Trim();
                String serviceName = serviceNameTextBox.Text.Trim();

                if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(host) && String.IsNullOrEmpty(port) && String.IsNullOrEmpty(serviceName)) return;

                if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(port) || port == "0" || port == "80") // assume port 80
                    connectionUri = String.Format("http://{0}/{1}", host, serviceName);
                else if (port == "443") // assume https
                    connectionUri = String.Format("https://{0}/{1}", host, serviceName);
                else
                    connectionUri = String.Format("http://{0}:{1}/{2}", host, port, serviceName);

                try
                {
                    context = new P3000Entities(new Uri(connectionUri));

                    LoadMachines_PSView();
                    LoadMachine_Downtime_PS();
                }
                catch (Exception ex) // not intended for production application
                {
                    MessageBox.Show(ex.Message);
                }
            }

    Back in ye olden days of the internet, I figured out a way to hack chatboards.. Being a youngster I found it amusing to change the settings on a users webpage (changing another users font colour and size, usually to the same as the background). And because so many people did not know BIOS from BIO yogurt, I even used to clear chatrooms with people thinking that some internal security scan had found viruses and stuff on their computers....

    Was all silly stuff to do, foolish at times but to a kid in college it was funny as well..

    *thread now hijacked*:oops:

    ... I am relieved as well but the tsunami threat for Thailand and New Zealand has been lifted... no news for the Philippines yet... :(

    Gaelic? Whether it is Irish, Welsh, Scottish or Cornish.. Get a room full of native speakers and somewhere in that room you will need a bucket - for the Phlegm:D

    I started out hacking a Prime P400 at a college in Scotland.

    One of these in fact (that's not me by the way :D )

    The spec was something like this

    although I'm pretty sure ours had much less storage, it also had about 30 terminals attached you had to wait about 5 seconds when you hit carriage return on the keyboard in the line editor before it would commit your line of program code or text :D

    Ah those were the days, also used to muck about on a Burroughs mainframe with punch cards at Glasgow University :)

    Och aye that's braw Yuna really good :D

    I speak a little music as well but sadly I can't read it any more even though I was taught to read music when I was 11, forgot it all :)

    I think the Phils is fine now it's way past the time when the waves would have past so no news is good news!

    That's such good news Keith.
    It seem that the worst fears did not happen. Thank God.
    At least everyone had time for preparations.:like:
    Could have been unthinkable for Phils.
