    Hi there,
I am hoping someone will be able to help me. I have a 12 week old baby and she suffers with trapped wind. On looking online I saw one post on a forum from a lady that had been recommended a product that she swears by by a Filipino nurse.
It is called rhea aceite manzanilla. She said she found some for two pounds in a shop in south London. I am based near north east London so it would be great if I could either source some online or in a shop more local to me.
Anyone happen to know where I could get this from?

I will ask my wife later. We have a young baby. She went through the same phase of colic. It lasted for about 2 to 3 months. We tried lots of things including switching to lactose free milk. Many people swore by various remedies that we tried but never seemed to work. We didn't try any filipino remedies as they wern't available. I am not 100% certain if the lactose free milk helped - its hard to prove one way or another but I suspect it did.

Apparently there are two causes of colic. One is trapped wind. The other is a reaction between milk and the babies tummy. Its hard to work out the root cause.

Some said that we just had to see it through as it always goes eventually and that it did. What a relief.

I, sometime, have some difficulties, trying to get my wife to understand that traditional filipino remedies aren't all what they seem to be.....:erm:

And some of the stuff sold in oriental stores, or stalls at various Barrio Fiestas, would not get a Drugs Agency approval at all but an outright ban from open sale....:erm:

So I would be extremely careful to use something on a child, or anyone, for that matter, which has not been properly tested and approved.

When my children were babies, we used to used oversized holes in the teats of their feed bottles, so that less or no air would be sucked in while feeding. And burping................... soon after...............

"Folk remedies" IMO are for cats & dogs only although I would not give any to my dog. :)

Gripe water was a good product for "wind" 40 years but the "do-gooders" had the alcohol content removed -- so I stopped taking it.

PS : Poteen works on Cow's with colic. Takes a bottle full though.

It still remains a mystery to us now. Thankfully it is behind us. Its teething now, but that doesn't seem half so bad.

Well prior to giving it I was having trouble getting her nappies to meet at both sides. She is a very slender baby so it didn't make sense that she had out grown her nappies. They go up to 13 lb and she was not even 10 at last weigh in. After around 24 hours of using it and changing her nappy it did up really easily. So I am assuming this is down to her releasing the trapped wind she had and decreasing the size of her middle.
I am going to try a baby massage later too to see if it helps aswell.

I remember spending a LOT of time with each baby with the infant my shoulder gently patting him and rubbing his back, to get him to burp after each feed. Certainly more than fifteen minutes! It's one of the uses of a father - men are not really much use with small babies, but we can do this and it helps us to bond with them.

I share the concern with local patent medicines. Kay and her mother both like using herbal remedies that they make themselves and she will often point out a plant to me and describe its use. That seems to me to be fine.

One step up from that are the quack medicines bought from the store, very often "Chinese" (but made in the Philippines) which are commonly missing anything that I would call an active ingredient. I remember a ringworm salve that was nothing more than an ointment, with no fungicide at all - all it would have done was to spread the infection! Kay has a tattoo between her shoulder blades - not for vanity, but to hide the scars left by a "faith healer" when she was 12...

In this case if I may suggest for you to avoid eating or drinking any highly acidic fruit or juices.. Like apples, citrus of any sort, pineapple, mango, etc.

As it may exacerbate the colic through your milk.
