Hi all, Does anybody have any good info on what is needed if you want to take your car over to Ireland whilst on the Surinder Singh route? The ferry costs seem reasonable but I'm not too sure of what is expected of a foreigner and his car hitting the roads of Ireland! Is there insurance you can get for a limited time, say 6 months? Would insurers in the UK insure you whilst in Ireland? Any details would be helpful. Thanks
Most car insurances will cover foreign travel for 1/2/3 months included in the normal fully comp policy. Some others will charge extra, and you can apply directly over the phone. Funny enough, my commercial policy, covers me for 365 days of continuous travel abroad, included in the price I paid...
Just read your insurance policy, some insurance companies require that you tell them before going abroad in your car. Make sure you are insured to drive there, I have personally had a couple of problems there.
The issue you could have in legal terms is once Ireland becomes your residence you should "begin" the process of transfering registration you should also exchange your driving licence (center of life for when you all return) so your ok for your initial arrival but need to begin to legalise yourself look for a local insurer as a tourist the car can remain for just under six months
I'm currently not insured on my car as it's sitting on the driveway. I use my work car for personal use so I'm not needing the little Smart car I have for the moment. It would be very handy though having my little one to use whilst in Ireland. I was given this link RSA.ie - Licence & technical requirements on another forum site so I'll be checking through it and seeing what the legalities are. Thanks again
