The Iphone 4S. Will it kill off compact cameras?

Late yesterday the Iphone 4S was unveiled, and the tech world stood back with every geek lapping up the specs of this phone.

Interestingly, the new Iphone sports a camera that has 8 megapixels, shoots at f2.4 and is capable of HD video recording. Apple reckons the imaging processor is "just as good as the ones found in in DSLR cameras", has no shutter lag and is essentially ready to point and click. The new Iphone seems to offer picture quality on a par with most sub £100 cameras (and possible a few above that price bracket) and in todays social media frenzy, this is going to cause a rush for other competitors like HTC and Samsung to improve the picture quality on their models.

And then, after the humble mobile contains a the features and more of the lower end compacts, more serious Photography enthusiasts might just have to go onto more advanced options like the bridge cameras and DSLRs offered by Canon, Nikon and the like.

But also, if phones have the same or better image quality of low end cameras. Why buy a cheap camera? This new phone has the potential to wipe a lot of products off of our shelves because of the sheer selling power of Apple.

Will the Apple Iphone 4S kill off compact cameras?

    Very possibly...

    I am not so sure..............:erm:

Whatever Apple does, will be unimportant enough not to bother Sony from losing any sleep over it.

I never seen such huge mark ups in prices as in Apple products, anywhere else.
Pity that people do not want to sit down and think about what they are being charged, and wether it is a fair price for whatever gadget they purchase.

Thought it was the quality of the lens also that made a good camera, IE canon lens etc

Point and clicks don't tend to have great quality lenses..

    Absolutely!

It's not thick enough to have a lens or sensor of acceptable enough size to give anything like the quality you get from the average compact, I will be extremely surprised if the iPhone comes up with anything near acceptable or comparable to a half decent compact.

But of course I could be proven wrong.

The bottom end Canon's have had great lenses for years and years and the Lumix camera's with Leica lenses are superb.

I will try and look for some old example from my Canon 40D from about 7 years ago, great wee camera.

    Makati Salcedo

Taken on a 4MP canon compact.

Although the large size is not perfect by any means, with various lens distortions and not great sharpness it is still not bad and I would still go for this over a camera phone as there is simply more control available.

Yes actually I had not actually noticed how good that was :D

Even in Makati there are plenty of cables hanging loose at 5ft 6'' just the right hight to electrocute the foreigners :D and keep most of the locals safe.
