Today has been the first day for both my wife and I to really spend time together and watch in depth the BBC News Channel coverage of the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami
    crisis.

To be truthful, we are both stunned and deeply saddened by what we have seen, we seem to be finding ourselves feeling almost traumatised.

We really didn't intend to be glued to the TV all day watching the horrific images, but we are just so deeply shocked we want and need to know more about what has, and is happening.

    It's all just so upsetting.

A big chunk of our lives together has been spent living in Yokohama and Sendai spread over a 20 year peiod.

I spent 2 years living in Sedai, working on a special project for JR-East. Made some very special lifelong friends, and had so many memorable times.
Just can't stop thinking what happened.

Some good news is that we finally managed to make contact with friends in Tokyo and Yokohama.
But nothing so far from Sendai.

    Just letting out some emotion

Oh Peter never realised you had history there :(

This is life sadly, there is no amount of human technology or intervention that can deal with the fundamental nature of our planet, if you live in the wrong place you live with risk, big risks, the Philippines is the same, something like this will happen one day in Manila and it will be much worse there as they don't have the same quality of construction in the Phils. I mention Manila only because it is the single largest concentration of population in the Phils.

What's happened is a tragedy but it's not as bad as Hiroshima and Nagasaki, at least so far, the country was incredibly well prepared, nowhere else would have survived an 8.9 quake so well, anything less and it would have had a negligible effect, this was a really extraordinary quake unheard of in the 'recorded' history of the planet.

It is difficult for some. I myself try not to watch the news regarding this tragedy, because there is nothing I can do about it. and when you see how that tsunami just engulfed entire buildings and swept them away like toys, it makes you realize how precious and vulnerable life can be. This event has destroyed entire families and communities. Lost to the sea despite their dreams and hopes and hard work for themselves and their loved ones:(

That's it exactly Keith, the personal connection to people you know and love. To places that hold personal memories.

Its possible to rebuild but looking at the images it will take some years and the trauma takes longer especialy if you have lost loved ones

I was really suprised how quickly they managed to clear and rebuild everything in and around Kobe.

I was actually in Kobe when that quake happened. January 1995 and I was still in bed at the hotel Washington. Buildings collapsed all around us. I was very lucky.
