I was aware that entire families lived in some cemeteries in the Philippines, but I did miss that documentary on TV, and it went off the radar in my mind....

As I was trawling through BBC online News, I came across this little article/blog thingy, which prompted me to have a look at immediately.

I do understand that at times, life throws all sorts of poo at you, and one has to mend and make do... But these people living in the Novotas Cemetery really, really do command so much respect for the hardships they go through every day of their lifes.

There is one thing tho, that bugs me a bit about that, one woman said that she lived there since 1986.....
It is a choice made then, not imposed anymore.... Certainly in all those years, circumstances must have become more benign, at one point or the other, to allow moving to better, cleaner and more salubrious pastures....
Maybe the convenience of squatting rent free, with stolen electricity and with only the worry of finding some food daily, makes them stay there...

Take my hat off to them, but it ain't for me.............

That is indeed shocking. The poverty levels that just go on ignored by the so called democratically elected Filipino Governments..

And those kids play amongst human remains too!

And to think I have seen similar on the streets of Cebu, Valencia and so on.. When she mentioned how many of the people make money from the port I guess they are those guys that just carry bags to and from the ferries for a few pesos a time. I think next time I go I will use their services more willingly..

The woman said before she was renting and then she bought her house for 3,000 pesos... I wonder from whom she bought the house :erm:

    Yeah, very shocking indeed!

Just like sir dom says, they stay there because of free electrity, water, and cable. And they got large streets/spaces where their children can play and roam around without them being hit by a car or something. The govt did their part on relocating them but still they choose to stay. Mostly because of the 'freebies' that they are getting.... oh well... welcome to the third world country...

I agree Yuna... most of them are professional squatters.... they get squat in other people's land/property and/or government property... they get mad when they are being relocated and demands compensation.. and then when they get their house, they sell it... and squat again!
