Born in England with Irish grandparents. Irish citizenship has been on my to do list for yonks. My personal travel is picking up again this year, so passport would finally come in handy.

Need to do the paperwork before any children cone along if you want them to be able to get. Not a quick process as have to be registered on foreign births register. I was born in Northern Ireland so got by birth so kids acquired it from me as first generation can pass it on. Adopted stepchildren took bit more work than daughter who was an automatic nothing required. All our kids would have to go down the foreign births register route if they want to pass on to their kids.

I wasn't but my Grandfather was and I believe I could get Irish Citizenship... I looked at it but seemed quite expensive... is there still a backdoor open there?

Unfortunately not. Backdoor option was only if you were born in Northern Ireland. In that scenario in 2019 they changed the rules so that you could use the EU settlement scheme when a number of people switched from spouse visa to EU settlement scheme. Big win as no application fees, no IHS charges and 5 year visa. Also no need for english test or life in UK for settle status which is equivalent of ILR. Both needed for citizenship. Also no rules on how much money had to earn or savings. Rules were more flexible and reasons looked for to grant as opposed to refuse. Wife got her settled status five years after we got married even though got married in UK on marriage visit visa and then had to go back to philippines to apply for spouse visa which was only option at the time so saved about eight months doing that.

The way it should be for families of British citizens as opposed to current family visa route.
