My Rish has been living in Paranaque Manila for several months with her aunt and I've visited her there in Sucat, staying with her in a room next to her aunts, wow what lovely welcoming people. What a privilege to stay in the community. I've seen nothing but warmth and good humour. I have always been cautious, but taking an adventurous approach to Manila, and experiencing public transport and busy markets, I've seen street kids sifting though rubbish and the usual stuff falling off the back of lorries so to speak, but even after dark have never fealt threatened. Manila is an amazing and rich place to visit.

Has a thought been given to the street kids and has anyone heard how they might be being caught up in the drugs crackdown, I've heard they often get caught up in drugs and most are so poverty driven that making any money is appealing. Rish has told me that there is a curfew on street kids at the moment. I hope that this frequently persecuted group doesn't bear the brunt of the drugs offensive, the reasons for them being on the streets are far too complicated for me to fathom, but it seems obvious that it's due to extreme poverty and lack of social care ?

Quite glad Rishia is with her family in Negros Oriental for a week, then hopefully coming to England.

Duterte hits local execs over trash in cities

MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte expressed dismay over the inability of mayors and governors to manage garbage in their areas.

Duterte lamented that the country's streets are strewn with trash even though local officials have discretionary funds that may be used to keep their cities clean.

"Many localities in the country are so dirty and yet the mayors are not doing anything about it," the President said at the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency office in Davao City last Friday.

"There is trash and garbage around and if you have to wait for the plastic to go inside the drainage every time there's a downpour and excessive rain water, nagka-clog," he added.

Noting that discretionary and intelligence funds are the easiest to pocket, Duterte vowed to form a special team that will review how local officials used their allocations.

"I will create a special team. I will review pati 'yung intelligence funds ninyo. 'Yan ang pinakamadaling mapasok sa bulsa eh," he said.

"Yung mga mayor na hindi performing, you make your city clean and peaceful."
He also said local officials who have beautiful offices and who use expensive vehicles should be ashamed of themselves.

Not sure I ever heard the Aquino`s address this problem even once??

What they require is a huge modern incinerator...Brown outs will be a thing of the past.

Duterte falls in line in Malacañang buffet
Lawyer Lloyd del Socorro, the person being held in the shoulders by Duterte in the viral photo, tells the story behind the snap

MANILA, Philippines — When President Duterte walked to the buffet table while surrounded by Presidential Security Group (PSG) officers, nobody expected that he was going to fall in line and wait his turn.

In a viral photo posted by the Presidential Communications Office, Duterte is shown standing behind a string of men patiently waiting to collect their dinner in a fellowship party at Malacañang. The post quickly gathered positive feedback from netizens lauding the 16th President of the Philippines' humility.

In a phone interview with Rappler, lawyer Lloyd del Socorro, the person being held in the shoulders by Duterte in the viral photo, told the story behind the snap.

Socorro said that the president was being stormed by the guests for "selfies," as he was walking toward the buffet table while he was surrounded by the PSG. Del Socorro just kept to his own and did not hope to get a selfie of his own because of the swarm of people.

What happened next changed his entire evening.

“I thought he was just going to pass by kasi parang hinahawi ng PSG (yung daan).Nagulat ako na nasa likod ko na siya,” he recalled. (I thought he was just going to pass by because the PSG was clearing the way. I was surprised that he went behind me.)

Wanting to show respect for the president, he asked Duterte to go ahead of him but he recounted that Duterte replied saying “No, no, no, bakit ako ang mauuna? Stay in line.Ikaw dapat ang mauna, this is a free country.” (No, no, no, why should I go first? Stay in line. You should go first, this is a free country.)

And that was when Duterte held him by the shoulders to turn him to face in front, just in time for the photograph. Del Socorro then took the chance to have his own selfie with the president.

They also need to start teaching the next generations of kids not to throw their damned litter and rubbish everywhere ! The parents are a lost cause.

Filipino`s used to burn the rubbish with the leaves Graham..Now that the local Government have followed/copied world and EU directives they are now banned and fined from doing that... Most poor families cannot or will not pay the garbage truck so they throw it in the city creek...It all gets jammed up in the city drainage culverts and once every couple of months they get 50 labourers to empty it out on the road side and then you get pics like the one above.. The stink is horrendous..
Ive said it many times before...They need huge incinerators hooked to the city power grid..

China ‘understands’ Duterte’s campaign on drugs
    July 19, 2016 2:16

CHINA on Tuesday said it “fully understands” the Philippines’ intensified campaign against illegal drugs and is willing to cooperate in stamping out the menace.

“China fully understands that the Philippine government under the leadership of President Rodrigo Duterte has taken it as a top priority in cracking down drug-related crimes,” the Chinese Embassy in Manila said.

It added that Beijing “has been firm and severe in drug control and in punishing all drug criminals in accordance with laws regardless their nationalities.”

The embassy issued the statement after Duterte bared his plan to discuss with China the alleged involvement of some Chinese visitors in illegal drugs.

“China has expressed explicitly to the new administration China’s willingness for effective cooperation in this regard, and would like to work out a specific plan of action with the Philippine side,” it added.

The embassy noted that China has entered into anti-drug agreements with many countries.

“Illicit drugs are common enemy of mankind. Fighting against all drug-related crimes is shared responsibility of all countries in the world,” it said. MICHAEL JOE T. DELIZO

Duterte Effect: Manila Imitates Davao City By Cleaning Up Divisoria And Baclaran.

Some call it the “Duterte Effect” some calls it the “Duterte Magic” [named after the new President Rodrigo Duterte], whatever you want to call it, we can agree that it has a positive effect on society, well at least in terms of discipline.

    But what is it exactly?

Passports to be valid for ten years and Drivers Licences for five - plus online applications for both which Filipinos will be able to do using free WiFi in any public place. Just a taster of the Duterte Presidency.

He's already done what his predecessor promised but failed to enact - Freedom of Information (Act).

You can read the full text of Duterte's SONA here. His plans seem quite ambitious but if implemented should drastically cut corruption by making government much more transparent. Interesting that he continues to push "federalism" and advocates the adoption of the "French" model (hopefully without a Holland in charge!).

I am pleased to see that he wants to improve the infrastructure in places other than Metro Manila and this is the President that envisages being able to board a train in Manila bound for Davao: whilst that may be some time away, the Mindanao Rail Project (to be funded by China) and the Cebu and Davao Transit Systems - a north-south underground railway in the case of Davao - are to start soon. Good to see a President that understands that the Philippines isn't simply the landmass of Luzon.

Indians THINK they speak English.... and look what they've done for call-centres.

Call-centre staff also need to be easily understood. Filipinos already have an advantage over many other so-called English-speaking countries in that regard (including Newcastle :D).
