Here we go with six weeks of another REAL sport. A great start for the England lads against the very strong and creditable Fijians. My heart is with England - but my gut feeling is that nobody will come near to the All Blacks. I hope I'm wrong. Al.
Totally agree. England performance wasn't their best by any stretch of the imagination but they did what they needed to do. Great opening ceremony too. Let's hope the next 6 weeks give us plenty of excitement. Come on ENGLAND!!
I was supporting Fiji tonight being an old Hong Konger. By long tradition, the stands at the Hong Kong Stadium boo the Wallabies, because of a foul on a Hong Kong player in the early days of the tournament, and cheer for Fiji, because they play Sevens so well, and can usually beat the All Blacks at it. On the basis of tonight, whilst we (England) got the five points, we should see off the Wallabies, but not the All Blacks or the Springboks. We were too undisciplined.
Its refreshing to see football taking a back seat for a change, good opening ceremony as HaloHalo as stated, enjoyable first game with a positive result for England. I feel it will be a "its taking part that counts" for England but you never know, England will have to up their game though if they are to progress to the latter stages of the tournament.
I'm not a rugby fan specially union, too slow too many scrums where's the skill in that! I prefer league, much faster but then again, I will watch the world cup only if England are playing.

I read that story, I didn't realise at all that they need so many calories, they are true athletes compared with your average rugby union player of yesteryear. Like in many sports, it has been taken over by the dieticians which isn't a bad thing at all, they are after all looked up to by the youngsters of today and set a good example.

Funnily enough they did a comparison of the Union player of yesteryear and today's player. Immense physical difference between the two. As you say dieticians and science maximising the players physical ability.
I think they will either come back with a vengeance or crumble, I prefer the latter One of the best matches I've seen for ages, with that and my local football team Bury winning yesterday I was a happy chap
I could do with loosing a few thousand calories, but I won't be doing it that way. Should say I can't do it that way.
