S.C. Gov. Haley plans to call for removal of Confederate flag near the state Capitol

"This announcement was a significant shift in position from what Haley and other state Republican leaders have held before.

Haley joined a growing chorus of voices calling for the flag to be moved from a memorial near the statehouse. Since a gunman shot and killed nine parishioners inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston last week, more and more people have criticized the flag’s presence near the state Capitol in Columbia. Hundreds marched over the weekend to protest the flag’s placement.

Over the weekend, authorities confirmed that a racist manifesto found online belonged to Dylann Roof, the suspected gunman. The Web site was littered with references to the Confederacy and images of the Confederate flag.

Haley’s announcement comes after days of peaceful protest on statehouse grounds and appeals from black leaders and activists to resolve the divisive issue once and for all."

I can understand why the flag has upset some people given recent events, a wise and thoughtful move.

However the flag is part of what the Southern States stand for and will always be flown, they are very proud of it there.

Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley, a Democrat, said: "The flag got appropriated by hate groups. We can't put it in a public place where it can give any oxygen to hate-filled people".

Just like the Union Jack and flag of St George has been used by certain groups in the UK, amounts to the same I think.

    Misguided....
take the flags down in the hope of people forgetting their history and make up....... out of sight, out of mind....

Racial prejudice of every sort will always be present in society, it is an undeniable fact of life.
And in my opinion, this will be even more truer if one feels threatened in his/her comfort zone, like it is happening lately in the UK, due to unchecked immigration, and some parties or individuals are taking advantage of this sad state of affairs to foment division.#

So taking the flags down, really, is as meaningful as denying the Holocaust.

    And No.

What I hate is the way that socialists with their agenda of breaking up UK society have made normal people afraid of showing pride in our national flags.

Hate is what it is all about:

“Some divisions are bigger than a flag,” Haley said. “We are not going to allow this symbol to divide us any longer. The fact that people are choosing to use it as a sign of hate is something we cannot stand.”

If it is planned to remove the Confederate flag altogether then it cause a lot of resentment down south, they are extremely proud of that flag, more than most people know.

I'd be furious if we could no longer fly the St George flag, flags symbolize a country or State.

Have you ever seen a BNP march? I was in London once and saw one. Very unpleasant. Hundreds of blokes in bomber jackets, shouting and waving the Union Jack aggressively. It turned out they were trying to hi-jack some sort of muslim festival in Trafalgar Square.

Those are the people who make some people lose their pride in the national flag, by using it to promote a racist agenda. Nothing to do with socialists.

I do have several pairs of Union Jack and St Georges cross cufflinks.

Interested to know what "muslim festival" was deemed inappropriate for Trafalgar square, was it a peaceful festival such as Eid, the end of the month of ramadan, or was it one of those hate preacher chappies?

I believe it was anti war stuff from what I remember. Some girl on the stage rambling on about some load of old rubbish to do with Islam.

The only threatening presence, however, was the morons in the bomber jackets, all waving Union flags, marching along Whitehall and chanting like a bunch of football hooligans. They were the only ones that I felt threatened by, particularly as I was with my wife at the time who, it just so happens, is an immigrant.

    I must be missing something.

To hoist the flag of a nation that fought and lost a war against the nation of which you are a citizen, a nation that existed only to promote slavery, and which was utterly defeated, seems to me to be adherent to your nation's enemies.

In Britain, that is the definition of High Treason.
