Random Filipino words/phrases and what they mean

    tagalog is the national language..and bisaya..cebuano..ilokano..chabakano..illongo and all other are just the local dialect that anyone come from Visayas and Mindanao spoke:vhappy:

    sa baba (downstairs)

    kind of :) Not sure what the literal translation is but Ana says that to the kids to get them to go downstairs or upstairs.

    I had wondered about that Elley as Wiki states that there are 90 or languages, but dialect's would make more sense, it's a bit like in the UK, Cornish versus Glaswegian versus Scouse versus Mancunian, we have 70 odd local dialects in the UK I believe, maybe more :erm:

    But I thought English was the official language while Tagalog was the mother tongue?

    So yeh, to clear up an earlier confusion:

    English is one of the 2 official languages in the Philippines. Filipino is the other. Filipino is based on tagalog (they're pretty much one and the same).

    University education and a lot of "official" business is conducted in English. However, Filipino remains the main language of communication. It is the national language.

    There are however, regional languages such as Cebuano (Visayan), Illonggo, Ilocano, Chavacano etc etc. These are not akin to like Geordie or Brummie English. Someone who just speaks tagalog would NOT understand a Cebuano conversation for example. They are separate languages in their own right, but from the same family.

    So if you're from Cebu, the likelihood is that you will speak Cebuano. If you're from Bacolod for example, the likelihood is that you will be Illonggo. With all of these different languages represented, Filipino (based on tag) is needed so all can understand each other.

    Tagalog is kinda like Hindi in India or Mandarin in China.
    Cebuano and all the other dialects are like .... gujarati or punjabi in India, or Cantonese or Foochow in China.
