I'm currently running Windows Vista (yes, I know rubbish, but it's been an OK and stable experience)

I'm now considering upgrading my Vista OS to Windows 8 Pro
Also to move from IE9 to IE10

    Anybody running these?
    Any feedback?
Advice, warnings, hints and tips ?

I'm not considering a new touchscreen laptop so I'll be using Win 8 pro in 'standard' form.

    Thanks in advance.

Peter, if it was me, I would backup all of my data then format the hard drive before doing an install of Windows 8

Having said that, I have not used 8. My sister has it and says it is a nighmare as it is nothing like previous versions of Windows.

I will get 8 when the touchscreen laptops start to come out en masse this year.

I am still on IE9 also.

Thanks Mike, I've learnt the very hard way about backing up absolutely everything. More than once too :erm:

Over the years I've build up a step-by-step of what to do how to do it the best order and all needed serials and activatons etc.
I'll also need to back up all my e-mails and contacts, Oh and my favourites lists etc
Takes quite a bit of thought.

I understand that IE10 is a cracking good browser and really fast too. Unfortunately it's not compatible with Vista.
Actually it's not compatible with XP either. A lot of folks are still using XP.
My vitual machine is running XP. I'll probably keep it that way for a while.

For me, although I've stuck with vista for ages, warts and all, it's letting me down in just too many ways now. It's fairly stable but suddenly develops issues that end up taking ages to resolve. I didn't ever upgrade mainly due to the high cost and the time and effort
    involved.
Window 8 is much much cheaper than windows 7 and I've also found the time (and motivation) to move onwards and upwards.

I'm just looking for someone to give me the extra push to finally make the leap by telling what a good move it would be.
    That's just me sometimes.

I've also had some bad experiences with my e-mail that cause me lots of problems.
Mostly I solved it with help from BT but I'd like to improve that side of things too.

Thanks for the feedback Mike. Appreciate it

Windows 8 as a desktop OS is a disaster by all reports, personally I would not install it, I've not tried it but I can see from looking at it that I would hate it on a desktop.

Now on a touch enabled device I think it would be a different proposition, I love my Windows Phone which has a very similar interface and I think it would probably be great on a tablet.

Read a report today that stated that system builders (the likes of Dell) are shipping 93% of new PC's with Windows 7 not Windows 8, that should tell you all you need to know, they really really dropped the ball this time around.

IE 9 is a fine and fast Browser as well Peter and Windows 7 was and is a really good stable operating system, personally I use the Google Chrome browser most of the time.

I just checked the pricing and saw the 45 quid offer see this link http://www.bit-tech.net/news/bits/2013/03/06/ms-win8-price-drop/1 check that you are not comparing prices related to this error.

    Hi Jim,
I went into Curry's/PC World yesterday and all laptops were on 8.
    There wasn't one on 7 - strange.
I played about for a while and the keyb "Windows" key takes you straght to the desktop.
    8 looked ok.

I'd better wait awhile and do some further practical research.
I've got three laptops, so might be worth just spending the £50 and playing away for while.

I only got interested after hearing such glowing reports on IE10 which won't run on my vista.

Thanks to all for the feedback.
Thanks oss for always taking time to respond to my techie issues.
You may be interested to know that I eventually gave up on my e-mail investigations and had to resort to seeking help from BT to re-install their e-mail client.
I aslo got to thinking that win8 using IMAP e-mail might have smoothed out my issues too
