    Hi

Just wondering what your take is on the English requirements for a filipino already in the UK and going for a nursing role.

My partner is planning to take up a nursing role in the UK once she is over, we know that the requirement for a nurse in the Philippines wanting a job in the UK is taking the IELTS exam and scoring 7 and above.

She was told by a visa agency (just an assessment) that she wouldn't need to get 7 on the IELTS test as this is just for a working visa and that she would be ok with the minimum.

Looking at the NHS website http://www.nhscareers.nhs.uk/explor...rofessionals/information-for-overseas-nurses/ it has a section in regards to "Process for nurses educated from outside the EEA". In my mind my wife falls under this and will need to take the academic version of IELTS with a score of at least 7.

Anyone had experience of this or a view on this?

Will contact the NHS direct also for clarification.

    Andy

@Anne may be able to help you with this one, she arrived in the UK a few months back and is a nurse, she may have looked into this very subject already and be able to give you some pointers.

Is she coming over on a partner visa? If so I would think the English requirement on that would be enough as she would have a residence permit.

Thanks Timmers, I also fired off an email to the NMC and see what they come back with also.

Maharg - she will be coming over on a spousal visa so hopefully the English requirement for that would be enough, as I know from her and her friends that the academic version is a quite a bit harder

    Cheers

Hello Andy. Yes, the IELTS score requirement for nurses working in most hospitals and nursing institutions here in the UK is no less than band 7 in all categories (Academic listening, reading, writing and speaking). However, in applying for a fiancée/spousal visa as entry clearance document in the UK, one has only to obtain a band score of 4.0in listening and speaking categories (either General or Academic Module is acceptable) with an over all score not less than 4.5 which falls under A1, I believe. By the way, in IELTS, the applicant should sit in all categories, meaning, one has to do the writing and reading tasks as well.

There is more than just the english test to consider. My daughter is an RN (Registered Nurse), in Manchester. She started off nursing in a care home. Then got a job with the NHS as a nursing assistant in Manchester Royal Infirmary. Then followed the below route.

    This is how she qualified:

    "What qualifications you’ll need
To work as a nurse, you’ll need a degree in nursing and you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You won’t pay university fees, as your education is funded by the NHS. You’ll also need to choose which of the four nursing specialisms you’d like to study – adult, children, mental health, or learning disability. Nursing requires a high level of technical competence and clinical decision-making skills, and you’ll spend half of your nursing degree on supervised placements in local hospital and community settings."

2nd page in there is information on IELTS level requirements:

    "International English Language Test (IELTS)

All non-EU trained applicants to the nurses or midwives part of the register must complete and provide evidence of the International English Language Test (IELTS) before submitting their application to the NMC.

You must complete the academic version of the IELTS test and achieve:

    • At least 7.0 in the listening and reading sections
    • At least 7.0 in the writing and speaking sections
    • At least 7.0 (out of a possible 9) overall "
