i'm sure if filipinos could divorce there would be a lot less living over the brush. Seems the norm for husband to check out of the marriage and family and shack up elsewhere.

In my opinion, the Philippines is already on it's way to being more free and liberal.
Any walk through Manila, Cebu City or any other city in the Philippines will show that change has taken place as it has done all around the world but slower than many countries.
It is relative.
When I was last in Cebu City in 2013, I wanted to buy my wife sexy lingerie but we couldn't find any in the larger department stores.
She was amazed to see much prettier things to wear in the shops of Bangkok a week later - we all know that Thailand is much more liberal than the Philippines.

Change in the province is slower, though. When my wife goes back to her village in the province, she wears more conservative clothes to stop any gossip.

Spain took longer to be more liberal than the UK as they were under the more repressive Franco regime but Catholicism is a common denominator
