I understand Mike, but me I am not a saint, these days however I would almost never break the limits, but I was not always so sensible in the past.

I am a stickler for lane discipline though and I don't care that I might only be on the left for 10 seconds, if it is safe I will always return to the left.

I see the results of accidents regularly, Jim.
I don't see why people speed - they should plan ahead before leaving for their destination.

If people want to speed, let them go on a racetrack where they can wipe themselves out and not children or other innocent people.

Hmm. the 200 mph claim sounds like exaggeration to me. You would have hoped that someone wanting a 200mph speed test wouldn't just choose the nearest Road but go find a suitable runway or the autobahn. The fastest I've ever personally been was 150mph on the autobahn and I can't imagine doing even that on the York outer ring road (which was a single carriageway with lights, roundabouts, turnings for a lot of it last time I was there - definitely not a motorway). I feel that if true, that's pretty bad. Too much risk of hurting other people.

Yes, of course it is an exaggeration. Clearly my friend was a liar.

Might I suggest you at least consult a map before rubbishing my post.

You will find that a 9 mile stretch of York ringroad (the first part to be constructed, back in 1976) is a dual carriageway.

What a strange and angry response. :) I lived in York for a number of years and I believe that this section is part of the a64. Anyways, I'm not just saying it because of the road layout, or because a dual carriageway is too narrow to wisely do it, (or even because there's no way I would even consider doing a fraction of that speed on the A64 which has way too many bends on it). I'm also saying that it seems exaggerated because the majority of production Ferrari models (if you discount the limited run models such as the F40) will not reach 200mph and even those recent models produced in the last ten years only exceed it by a small margin. Consequently i think it's likely that it's an exaggeration simply because of the sheer amount of straight road that you would need to safely get to that speed. As I pointed out previously, bends on the roads and the road camber are not designed for cars travelling at 200mph. I believe that this was a pretty stupid thing to do if your friend was not exaggerating. I'm sorry that you feel that you have a personal axe to grind on that. Perhaps you should calm down and have some coffee. :)

But it becomes the fastest car in the world on a steep enough hill :)

Yeah. Well you and I know that 'exceeding 200mph' isn't easy, even in a supercar. Think a guy bragging about the speed he went is a function of how many pints he's had. :)

That reminds me of this joke:

"Q. What's the definition of mixed emotions?
    A. Seeing your mother-in-law drive off a cliff in your new car."

I told that joke to the mother of my ex-wife. She was not amused. :)

Admittedly, That 2litre diesel Beamer engine I got under the bonnet is a bit of a work horse...

When I came back to the UK I was amazed at the number of diesels and hybrids. Then I saw the petrol prices and realized why. I'm currently driving the Jaguar XJR (X308) model. Its one of my favourite cars from my past (I had one before and then sold it for a BMW diesel after my ex-wife decided it was too expensive to run - ugh) - It's got the 4 litre supercharged V8 and drinks petrol like the space shuttle but I don't do many miles and its a bit of a classic now. Got it from a retired surgeon who only did 33,000 miles in it. I guess if I had to drive around seriously I would be in an oil burner. :)
