Microsoft Office Caveat

The newer releases - 2013 and later (including Office 365) - have a rather anti-social restriction which was not included in any earlier release. It is that the proofing language used will always be the same as the Windows default language/keyboard settings - regardless of how you configure Office's settings.

So, if like me, you live outside the UK and you have a locally-sourced PC with a US keyboard layout - the only layout that's available here - Microsoft Office now believes that I am American and insists that I use American dictionaries. I can select UK-English on a document-by-document basis but I have to select this each and every time I open a document - even though I select UK-English as the default language. And if I do so, I can no longer add words to the dictionary.

As I say, this restriction is relatively new and with Office's constant prompting me to sign-up for Office 365, it actually gives me a very good reason to remove Microsoft's bloatware and go back to using Open Office. And since Open Office is also available under a variety of Linux platforms, I am finding fewer and fewer reasons to continue with Microsoft's operating systems.

    Things could be worse.

If you were in France you might be stuck with an AZERTY keyboard, and default French spell check.

    C'est la vie.

Its a pain assisting our Japanese colleagues when they visit our office. Remembering the images of icons helps.
