    Hi everyone
My wife and I are in the process of applying for a family visa, when we got married she applied for her passport but was told that she could not get her married name on passport as she had no id with her married name, we did however have the marriage certificate and copies of my passport.
My wife really wants to use her married name if/when she gets to the UK, so the question would be....
Is it possible to apply for visa in her maiden name, then use her married name once she gets here? Or will she need to update her passport?

Yes she can apply for visas in her maiden name, my wife did it , as have others on here all the way through the process only switching to her married name when applying for British citizenship in 2022.
Yes you can use your married name outside the visa process for things like bank accounts job applications, doctor dentist registration they may just ask to see marriage certificate (no biggy)

I have come across a stumbling block when mixing maiden and married names. My wife’s passport, visa application and therefore BRP is in her maiden name. So the problem with using your married name crops up when you want, for example, to open a bank account. Everyone want prove that she lives at the home address. Marriage certificate is not enough, everyone wants printed prove, but everything has maiden name. We have decided, for simplicity, to stick with her maiden name for everything until the time come when we get her citizenship, we will then change everything to her married name.

We are in a similar position. As my wifes passport was in her maiden name we did all her visas in that name and consequently her BRP is still in her maiden name. We want to apply for British Citizenship for her now as she has her ILR earlier in the year but we want that in her married name. How do we do that? Is it a case of get the BRP changed first (on first looks that's not cheap at £180 so would rather not waste that if we don't need to!) or can we just apply in her married name? She already has a UK provisional licence in her married name, as is the case with her HMRC tax account, National insurance number etc. How did you go about it?

Citizenship is outside the visa journey albeit BC is the goal!
You can apply with her maiden name on the BRP ( British Resident permit)once she has attended the ceremony got her certificate you apply for British passport ( one of the question on passport application is to change maiden to married name ( we along with others have done it this way)

Thanks for that info Mattecube. I assume that once they obtain BC then the BRP is no longer valid/used/applicable and its cancelled ? After obtaining their British Passport, do they keep their Filo passport in their maiden name (until expired) and then change that to married name later ?

BRP cut up and return to ? System gives you address or Google it!
Yes you can keep the Filipino passport in maiden name and retain duel citizenship for duration of the passport once expired then you have to apply for your Filipino citizenship and passport, depending on frequency of visits to Philippines if your wife only has say one year left on Filipino passport before BC application you could apply for a new Filipino passport in maiden or married name then once you get that apply for BC and you will have near 10 years duel citizenship!!

Sorry, are you saying that they automatically loose their Philippine citizenship on getting BC ?

No they lose it when the current Philippines passport expires but at this point as stated earlier they apply to reaquire.

I believe you are correct as legal trigger is gain of another citizenship. At that point lose citizenship and passport should no longer be valid.

Reality will be that the system can't pick up acquisition of another citizenship and cancel passport.

Have a look at the Republic act 9225 Retention and reacquisition of Philippines nationality 2003

also if you think about it, if they lost their Philippines nationality on gaining the BC this would suggest that the Philippines don’t permit duel nationality, which they do.the person wouldn’t be a dual national but they are.
The trigger point is the expiry of the Philippines passport.

I'm a bit late coming to the party, but my wife applied for her Spouse visa in her maiden name and everything she has/does here in the UK is all in her maiden name, personally I think its all a matter of choice.

Not sure about all the small print and different country rules and regs but I know a Filipina with a Filipina mother, but born in US, now living in Manila. She has 2 passports, no question about loosing any citizenship, she is dual and just keeps both passports valid.
