Hi my names Paul i come from Chester .after 33 years in the health sevice i will be retiring at the end of April . shortly after this i intend joining my fiancee in Davao where we plan to live .we have known each other for two years now. ,i would like any advice on things i should take with me and any vaccinations i might require.
Hi Paul "I suppose someone has to live there". We have a Welsh member lives there and enjoys the place. Perhaps he will "fill you in". I just, well December, moved here permanently. Built a house here in 2007 and now ensconsed and it is "only getting better". Enjoy. Cheers Tom
Hi Paul, best of luck with your plans. Have you ever visited Davao before? I visited once, about five years ago and it was quite nice, but nothing special. No need for vaccinations, just drink lots of G&T, the quinine keeps the mosquitos away. Big advice: make the plans for yourself, not for the girlfriend. Good luck!
Hi Dave .no never been but been reading lots about the city . security is the best of it,s kind so iv,e read.G/T huh lol well i do like a drink ,not sure if that will be enough though . thanx for the advice.
Paul ...... don't run before you can walk. I'd suggest renting for the first 6 months. Will give you a chance to discover the place, and decide on which areas you're comfortable with etc etc. Also make a point of checking out Samal Island..... some nice resorts there, and land is cheap. But remember, as a foreigner you cannot own land... only a condo. Next time I'm out there, lets get together for a Red Horse at Jack's Ridge.
hi .yes i am planning on renting for a year i am going to marry my fiancee,of. two years . by the way any good sports bars to recomend.i,m a big footy fan.she is already renting for us .seems a quiet area.
Hi Paul, welcome to the forum. One of the admins is a Davao native, I'm sure when she pops by she might have a few tips... Though she has a little toddler who keeps her busy and offline these days
Hello Paul, welcome to the Philippines. We have a house in Davao City and spend quite a lot of time in the area. We also have a large number of family members living there. I do wish you very best of luck and hope you'll settle down well. Living in the Philippines is not something that suits everyone, and you'll certainly need a certain mindset. You're new here and haven't given much background information, but I'd like to suggest you don't 'burn all your bridges' here in UK. Hope you'll stay around Paul, you experiences will help us all.
HI Mic.well i,m about to retire from the health service . been with my lady 2 years now .did,nt have much luck bringing her here to live in the uk. so we opted for trying Davao .Maria is now in an apartment and i plan to join her in may . do you think i should be vacinated for the heps .
I sincerely hope that you are ready for this move, and are fully aware of the various hurdles that you will encounter along the path. Personally, after having had a read up on several topics, I have given up on retiring anywhere near the Philippines, although a holiday or two will be on the cards..... A few of our forum members are living there permanently, and seem to be happy with the choice they made, it is just me I suppose.
well i have the support of my fiancee to help me and she will look after my welfare .she is so protective and will be looking out for me .so i,m lucky to have her by my side to help me settle .
Concerning vaccinations, it's always best practice (in my opinion) to follow formal and official guidance rather than to follow the overabundance of anecdotal based suggestions floating around the internet. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office webpage here offers good advice and some good helpful links specifically relating to the Philippines. The FCO links include the National Travel Health Network and Centre for Philippines, as well as NHS Choices and additionally the FCO's own Travel Health pages offering advice on how to stay healthy when overseas. Reviewing the information available reveals the following vacination (or booster) recommendations:- - Typhoid - Tetanus - Hepatitis A - Hepatitis B If you follow the links above you'll see quite a few other vaccinations that you should consider depending on where you'll be going. One of the things you may want to 'brush-up' on is Dengue Fever. Although there's no vaccination or medication to prevent dengue, it can be managed if you know the signs. Importantly, be sure you know, and your wife keeps a note of, your blood type. Have a look at this NHS Choices page Which travel vaccinations are free? You'll find other useful stuff about vaccinations there Hope this helps
Thanx for the information,my Fiancee has told me about Dengue fever.good thing you mentiond blood type not sure what my blood type is will check on that .once again thankyou for your advice and the links you have suggested.
As I said before, best of luck. But I suspect that you will have problems settling in. It is a big step to take, especially when you are not familiar with Davao, or the culture of your Fiancee. From the limited information you have given, I think you are an idiot, but best of luck anyway! Keep your options open, exit plan, any doubt -> get out!
I wouldn't go to the lenght of calling him that at all, as he seems to be just severely ill-advised. Don't cut the bridges behind you. if you own property here, do not sell up, but rent it out, to provide some kind of stable income, were things to go pear-shaped, as often happens with anything Phil....... Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, get involved with any business proposition offered to you. DO NOT lend money to anybody, or offer to start anybody in business for any reason........... Your pad will be full of people you don't know, eating you out of the house, unless you put your foot down with your girl and set the house rules in stone. oops......... gotta go, her indoors is watching me..............
