"BRITISH households face possible power shortages and soaring energy bills as a result of Russia’s decision to place its military on a war footing over the situation in Ukraine, it is feared."

"Experts are concerned that the Russian state gas exporter Gazprom might try to influence new leaders seeking to follow a pro-EU course by ramping up gas prices.

Similar disputes in 2006 and 2009 led to stoppages in exports to Europe, which gets around a third of its gas from Russia."

    In a word, no.

Don't read the Daily Expresss; it is worse than the Mail.

Britain's reliance on Russian gas puts us in a tricky situation, probably another reason why Britain wont be so vocal about the situation in the Ukraine.

What is the percentage of our supply do we get from Russia and are there any other alternative countries that could supply us???

Negligible; most of Britain's gas is still supplied from the North Sea and most of the balance is imported by sea, from Algeria, Nigeria and the Middle East. Britain does not even show up on most lists of Russian gas importers.

The papers must be exaggerating our reliance on Russian gas, no surprise there then :)

They obviously didn't bother to check before they wrote the article.

It's a while since I worked in the north sea but don't we back fill some of the fields there to act a storage for gas? Thought i read something about that once though probably dreamt it.

I would like to think that this is the case, certainly makes a lot of sense to save for a rainy day so to speak.

Here is a bit on that very topic. Gas storage wells have been drilled in Chesire in recent times, for example. And gas storage is helping as a buffer just now. Basically though, Britain doesn't meet all of its own gas needs so it has to be topped up from outside its own shores. Obviously the differential will vary with time of year. It's a bit of a wake up call that we don't meet our own needs and are reliant on imports and being on good terms with the countries that supply us. EG Russia.

Dont forget. UK oil and gas production has peaked and is in decline. (Shale gas not included).

"Europe’s biggest stockpiles of natural gas since at least 2009 are damping the threat of any potential disruptions in supplies from Ukraine, the main transit route of Russian fuel to consumers in the west."

You will notice the growth (actually, its the return) of imports of LNG by sea.

Less than 50% of UK gas is UK supplied, evidently. This is dropping year on year.

So, as time goes by the UK will import more and more and have no control on the supply.

Unless they go for alternatives including shale gas.

Thanks for the map, John. (Be warned that I can bore for Britain on gas by sea...)

You can have some control over the supply of imported gas by placing your supply contracts with several countries and by selecting countries that are less likely to have revolutions or to rake against you. Australia for instance is a pretty safe supplier. The biggest exporter is Qatar, but most of that gas goes East. There is no need to buy from Russia and indeed past Russian antics have made them quite unpopular as a supplier.

So shale gas might be our saviour after all if none of the problems arise like in the US.
