    From Apple:

"If you’re a texter, you’ll love Messages on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Now they all come with iMessage, a service that’s an even better kind of texting. Because it’s free for you and anyone texting over Wi-Fi using an iOS device or Mac with iMessage. And it’s unlimited."

I have a new iPhone and this is in place. So in other words it is possible to text another person using an iPhone for free, if it is Wifi to Wifi. I guess that would be anywhere in the world.

    Quite useful.

For the iMessage function to work, it has to be enabled in settings on both phones (Settings > Messages > iMessage > On)
