on my return flight from phils I got a 12hr stop over

I get to HK about 10:35pm and planing to book
a hotel, maybe in or close to kowloon

not looking for anything to fancy more somewhere
to have quick sleep, shower and get up early to
    have a little look round

if anyone has some good advise on hotels and things
to do for few hours while I there, they would be most appreciated

    many thanks

Personally, I have very little experience of HK. As I only got there by ship.

So I wouldn' t really know what to suggest. But............
I would not leave the airport under any circumstances, as the danger of missing the plane increases, due to various factors outside your control, but mainly traffic on the roads, as the hub has been moved out of town now, and is not as easily accessible as it once was..

Although you may feel tired from the first leg of your trip, you have to consider the pros and cons of leaving the airport, security, bag check in again, taxis, and the danger of nodding off for too long............
Staying airside, with a couple of double espressos inside you and a decent book, or use the free wifi...... Will help you while the time away.

Some of the other members will be able to advise you better on this issue, as they have traveled from and to that particular airport..

Sorry I couldn't be of much use........;)

Personally I would not leave airside either unless I absolutely had too, most airports will have couches somewhere that can use, might be hard to get a space, but better than missing your flight for all the reasons Dom mentions above.

I echo Dom and oss's advice. I'm sure though there is a "short-stay" hotel in Terminal 2 where you can book a room for so many hours as required (Singapore airport has these as well), but for the life of me I can't find it.

Could be worth emailing Hong Kong Hotels Association info@hkha.org as the airport is constantly evolving with many new facilities over time. I've used HK airport many times, but I'm amazed every time I go there how it grows and grows! The airport website is http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/index.html

Other than that, I can recommend a website called 'Sleeping in Airports' http://www.sleepinginairports.net/ and this page http://www.sleepinginairports.net/asia/hongkong.htm#.TyJ89PlY_l8 offers some good tips on where to hang out at the airport during a long stayover.

Thank you all for thoughts on this

I booked 12 hours stay in The Travelers' lounge
    in the airport

I may see about taking a little trip into HK
Just after I get there just to have a little look

If you are looking for somewhere cheap in Kowloon, The Nathan rd area is your best bet. The Mirador Mansions is a big appartment building and split into lots of little guest houses of varying quality. It's next to the Holiday Inn, about 200 yds from the harbour and Salisbury Rd. It isn't anything special though, prob no more than 2*. If you look on asiarooms.com it should set you back around 600Hkd a night - 50 quid. Hotels are not cheap in HK
