Google on Thursday (US time) unveiled a new touchscreen-enabled Chromebook running its Chrome OS that had some drawing comparisons to Apple's MacBook Air.

Linus Upson, vice president for engineering, said the screen has the highest pixel density - 239 pixels per inch - of any laptop.

"Packed with 4.3 million pixels, the display offers sharp text, vivid colors and extra-wide viewing angles. With a screen this rich and engaging, you want to reach out and touch it—so we added touch for a more immersive experience. Touch makes it simple and intuitive to do things like organize tabs, swipe through apps and edit photos with the tip of your finger," Upson said in a blog post.

"And since it’s based on Chrome OS, the Pixel boots up in seconds and never slows down, requires almost zero setup or maintenance, and comes with built-in virus protection. Best of all, it stays up to date with automatic updates every few weeks," Upson added.

Upson said the touchpad is made from etched glass, and honed using a laser microscope, adding the laptop's body is made from an anodized aluminum alloy to create a smooth and durable surface.

"Vents are hidden, screws are invisible and the stereo speakers are seamlessly tucked away beneath the backlit keyboard," Upson added.

    Other features include:

•Speed: an Intel Core i5 processor and a solid state Flash memory architecture make the Pixel "remarkably fast."
•Connectivity: carefully positioned WiFi antennas and dual-band support, and Long-term evolution (LTE) engineered directly into the machine.
•Storage: one terabyte of Google Drive cloud storage is included with the Pixel.

Upson also said Google products like Search, Gmail, YouTube, Maps and Google+ Hangouts are integrated.

    Macbook air comparison

A report on The Next Web said the new Chromebook comes with a Gorilla Glass multi-touch screen, 12.85-inch display, 2560 x 1700 screen, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 32GB solid state drive and 1TB of Google Drive cloud storage, free for three years.

It said such specifications are "impressive" and appears to compete against the Macbook Air and other high-resolution screen devices.

"When you compare these specs against the Macbook Air, it’s actually a bit similiar: the MacBook Air 13-inch has the same resolution, but a lower pixel per inch," it said.

The Next Web quoted Pinchai as saying the Pixel stacks up against the MacBook Air, which lacks a touchscreen display.

But it also noted an initial user testing showed the touch surfaces "don’t want to be vertical."

Also, it said that after a short time, "you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off."

The Pixel with WiFi is priced at $1,299, while the LTE model will cost $1,499 and will begin shipping the first week of April
