Google Inc. has updated its Chrome browser to include a new security feature that blocks sneaky extensions and add-ons.

Chrome 25 automatically disables third-party add-ons silently installed by other software, PC World reported over the weekend.

"Users can approve a silent-installed extension by clicking a button in the dialog box that appears when Chrome blocks the add-on," PC World said.

Google has been limiting add-ons since July 2012, when Chrome 21 blocked add-ons hosted on a third-party website. Only add-ons from Chrome's Web Store are allowed.

PC World said website designers can trigger an add-on install from their URL using "inline installation," though the actual add-on will still have to be hosted on the Chrome Web Store.

But Chrome is not the first browser to block stealth add-ons - Mozilla debuted a similar feature for its Firefox browser way back in November 2011.

    Other features

The updated Chrome also has the Web Speech API that lets website and Web app developers add speech recognition features.

Chrome 25 also patched 22 bugs, nine of which were considered "high."

Meanwhile, Google disabled MathML in Chrome 25 over security concerns. Other browsers like Safari and Firefox already support MathML
