I am shocked, shocked to see such a term here; use of the words "bar fine" may suggest that you are consorting with prostitute, which is well known to be a criminal offence in the Philippines.

The correct term is "Early Work Release Fee"; see here:

I've had it confirmed by my former flatmate and another friend.. This IS the Canadian who used to beg from students in Manchester!

Why is he in Manila? I guess he has some money but bums off of the western tourists there who fall for his story about a Filipino taxi driver robbing him. They take pity on him and give him whatever they can afford.

    Scam artist!

He is actually quite clever. He chose the name "Marty Robbins" who sang an old American song called "Beg to you", then whilst sat on the wall at Manila bay (a popular place for tourists) he asked a passing Filipina to post his plea on Facebook and pointed to a Facebook profile that screams fake (all locked down with little public info and hardly anything, posts by friends with similar locked down profiles).

If his plea goes viral, this guy could get thousands from unsuspecting people!

He's not the only one, there were about 2 other reports that I have heard specifically around Ortigas in the past years.

I also remember that maybe last year or2 years back, there were 2 American guys who popped in our office asking for some spare change because they were robbed or something. Our employees knew better and shoo-ed them away.

I wised up to this kind of scam several years ago, after I had given 100 baht to an expat guy near MBK in Bangkok, that guy had a similar tale.

100 baht is a couple of quid, nothing really for a fellow expat who has hit the bad times.

But as I walked away I knew I had been scammed by a bullshit story, never again!

And not just in Manila. There's a 30-something year old American who regularly begs in and around Ayala Mall in Cebu and has been doing so for three or four years.

I guess this is prevalent anywhere you go, it doesn't mean that if you are white, you are well off or not a scam artist.

    Very true.

One of the features of life here is that you dont see begging on the streets in the Isle of Man. Unlike mainland UK. There is virtual full employment. However one can get ripped off in the shops a little. :D

I get very annoyed by the sight of citizens of relatively wealthy countries begging.

I am even more annoyed by "economic migrants" who survive by begging and theft in a foreign country, the EU open borders causes big problems in this respect.

Charity begins at home, help out your trusted friends and neighbours when you can, everybody else looks after themselves.
