According to the pre-Valentine survey of Social Weather Stations (SWS), 73 percent of adult Filipinos believe in “forever” or a long and lasting love, 16 percent said they do not believe in it and 11 percent are undecided.

Married respondents have a strong net belief in “forever” at +67 compared to +46 among those with live-in partners and +36 among singles.

Net belief was strong among both men and women, at +59 and +56, respectively.

Belief in “forever” was also very strong in all age groups, except among ages 18-24 or the youth, where it was a strong +45 among men and a strong +46 among women, the SWS said.

    Long distance relationship

Taken from Dec. 5 to 8, the survey also found 67 percent of respondents who said they believe in long distance relationships.

Belief in long distance relationships is stronger among marrieds than singles and those with live-in partner, the SWS said.

Marrieds have a very strong +52 net belief in long distance relationships, one grade higher compared to the strong +37 among singles and strong +32 among those with live-in partners.

In general, net belief in long distance relationships was strong among both men and women, at +48 and +44, respectively.

    Rizal Park ready
Lovers and other visitors will see a different Rizal Park on Valentine’s Day as the National Parks Development Committee (NPDC) has spruced up the public facility to turn it into a romantic place for couples.

With the theme “Heart 2 Art,” the park entrance along Taft Avenue has been decorated with heart arches to greet visitors on Feb. 14.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year and Sunday has always been a busy day for Rizal Park, whether there is an occasion or not. This Sunday, the NPDC is expecting 150,000 to 200,000 visitors.

To highlight the celebration, the NPDC and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts have prepared activities for lovers.........

What they believe in and what they actually do are clearly two different things. Otherwise the rate of single mothers wouldn't have gone up about 20 times in the last 50 years, would it?

Your observations about Filipinos are offensive. If you want to bore people with your homespun theories, post on a site of fellow-travellers or have you been banned from LinC again?

What's offensive about that. It's true. Whatever they may say to some magazine's poll, it's obvious that in reality Filipinos are less inclined to stay in relationships than they ever have before. Although the '20 times in 50 years' surge in single mothers is just a guess (there are no accurate figures) I don't think it is far off the mark.

You make stuff up and state it as fact.

You, who spends four months of the year as a sex-tourist, are in no position to make moral judgements about those you take advantage of.

Even in the past 10 years, there are noticeably more single mothers than before. In the last 50 years, when there were very few, there's been an absolutely HUGE increase. At least 10 times, if not 20.

It is nice to believe in long term love even if it doesn't come to fruition, don't you think?

Kind of puts them in good company with the rest of the human race, really, doesn't it?

Pot calls the kettle black, from what I can see. And are you yourself in a moral position to criticise anyone's alleged lifestyle in the Philippines? Look in the mirror and ask yourself that question Markham.

It is in all likelihood that Whipster is right on this, although no real data is presented. Surely there has been a drastic increase in the rate of single mothers in the UK, Ireland and many Western countries too, given that 50 years ago being a single mother was a big taboo?

Any stats that can be observed can be found here:

But I'll leave it to others to trawl for it.

I don't get the impression that Markham makes things up. He seems a straight guy. I just get the impression that he doesn't approve of a mongering lifestyle and frankly I don't blame him. I also feel that certain other people are going out of their way to be obnoxious.

I think its the case that a lot of people on the forum have good morals, decent and were brought up in the "good old days" so to speak where people tended to stick together through thick and thin.

As posted by others, it is not just the Philippines that has a high ratio of single mothers, to me its just a sign of the times and the figures for single mothers will continue to rise throughout the world.

I agree to some extent Timmers but surely he who is without sin should cast the first stone? And if I disagree with someone (who albeit makes a mean-spirited in the context of the thread yet fairly correct observation), does that give me a right to call them a sex tourist?? Surely that is a major overreaction. Anyways apologies if I am missing something here or I seem to be reading a different thread to others!

I do honestly think that if there any sex tourist on the site then they know themselves who they are unless they want to kid themselves, its entirely their choice of course if they want to take this path, as long as no underage sex and so on is going on then I do not see a problem with it.

In my younger days when I travelled extensively around the world for work purposes I often gave in to the ladies of the night including when I was in the Philippines, only after drink mind you, I was much too shy without a gallon of beer in me :). To be perfectly frank I couldn't resist if I had drink inside me and it was even worst if I had a like minded colleague with me.

I still travel around the world a bit but I have not had a drink for 12-14 years so there is zero chance of anything like that happening again, to give my own take, I just looked at picking up a girl as an extension to a good night out, nothing more than that and I do not have any regrets.

As they say at the police station, a statement always starts with with pub you were drinking in :)

That's my honest opinion for what it is worth.

Ah. It all becomes clear on another thread. Which is where the aggro should have stayed. When I left it, it was an innocent chat about money...

I also feel that certain other people are going out of their way to act like some sort of Jeremy Kyle, which is rather obnoxious in return don't you think?

Andy the man is posting based on his prior knowledge of this individual outside of this forum, I cannot vouch for the accuracy of his knowledge or otherwise.

In 'his' context it is not an overreaction.

I've been living here since 2007 and I'm married with two kids. Until a couple of years ago, I was a staff member on the much larger and busier Living in Cebu Forum where Whipster is/was also a member, although he uses "Mr Whippy" as his user-name there. When I started moderating there, it was a family-friendly site aimed at giving info principly about Cebu and Mactan islands but also the rest of the country in general. Unfortunately it slowly degenerated into catering more and more for the mongerers and those of us who were married and living here left.

I actually don't care what Whippy gets up to so long as he keeps it and his homespun opinions about Filipinos to himself. Karma will take care of the rest.

the poll and article is really corny but the most interesting part is the high numbers from the 'long distance relationship' questions.

I think this could well be a case of wish-fulfillment too.

the reality is that tens of millions of people being seperated from each other for years at a stretch takes a huge toll.

I knew one girl whose mom was in Dubai, dad has been in Saudi for nearly 20 years. She had seen them both once - seperately - in that time. She has no recollection, ever, of seeing her parents together. They left when she was still an infant. And the two of them despite being married for 25 years and with Saudi and Dubai being so close have also almost never seen each other. I wonder if they asked more or less permanent exiles like them if they believe in long-distance relationships in the poll.

What may or may not have happened on another website has no relevance here, which clearly you are still bitter about. If opinions are not allowed then it should be universally applied, moderators judging what is acceptable.

Karma indeed. I see you have joined the Karma Police. Proceed to interrogate then burn the witch. But as a neutral, it doesn't make pretty reading in my opinion. Just my opinion.
