After having a go at Talk Talk, it seems smaller email providers have experienced DDOS attacks in the last few days. VFEmail was taken offline for a few days, Protonmail, an encrypted email service in Switzerland was next, and they stupidly paid a ransom, yet the attacks on them continue. Runbox in Norway were offline for a while after an attack. My email provider Fastmail came next, but they've beaten them so far, literally a 5 minute outage. One thing is for sure, they'd have a hard time bringing down the big boys - Google, Yahoo, Hotmail have servers all over the world, it would take a lot to knock them out - for sure there would be local disruption, all they would do is reroute traffic to other servers. All this shows how vulnerable the internet is, and how potentially it all could go horribly wrong. There's always that thought at the back of mind that we rely far too much for the web for simple things in life - if that went, how would we cope?
Not only do we rely on the internet, we trust the internet, as it increasingly takes control of our lives. Bad idea!
