I'm currently selling a phone for a friend on ebay (Nokia Lumia 800) and got a message from an Ebayer the other day simply asking "Is this item still for sale?" I responded with a simple "Yes, it is still for sale",

    And now I get this...

Decided to play along with a dummy email address. Should be fun:)

No, no, no.. Some are able to create fake ebay websites that you log into (which is why I used a dummy email).

Yeah, I know............. Many times I sent them to spoofpaypal, so that they could get them off the air.

I've just bought a product on eBay for £574.
Collecting it near Rochester this week.
It was reassuring to speak to the seller today.

I did a lot of research to find the model and also to see what they were selling for, so when one was for sale again I knew what maximum I could offer.
It was quite stressful during the last hour, my wife said it was like gambling (although she doesn't gamble).
    Glad it was over :like:

I sold a laptop on Ebay last year, only £150, but the day after I had sent it out, I had an email from Ebay telling me not to send it as the buyer was involved in some fraud. Maybe I was lucky, but I had no problems getting the money through Paypal & it cleared to my account and I heard nothing since. Funny though, I got a few spam emails via Ebay trying to sell me the same laptop I sold. I complained to Ebay, and this seemed to have stopped it. To be honest, I wouldn't buy anything expensive from Ebay, its nearly always cheaper on Amazon or elsewhere.

I sent a copy of the message to ebay! Despite my yearning to wind this person up, they might also be scamming other people not so versed in scams and in particular the 419 scam...

Got a reply off of them today, seems they'll be dealing with the offending account.

I've bought some expensive stuff in the past off ebay with no problems, you really have to check the sellers feedback, not just the total numbers but the actual comments people left, type of things that the seller usually sells, total time trading all that kind of stuff, so far no problems.

It's also a good idea to ask the seller questions about whatever you want to buy, that can give you a good idea of their degree of professionalism.

For things like quality second hand laptops or the likes it's hard to find anything better than ebay in my opinion.

    Yes, I agree Jim.
I probably would never have found what I wanted as buying my product new was £1,500+ so buying used was right for me.
I was talking to someone in work today who alerted me to the scenario that a seller's friends can pose as buyers to artificially inflate the price of something, and if people do not start a bidding frenzy then the seller can just pull the product if they had previously mentioned that the product was for sale elsewhere also.
I have had success so far with eBay but I put in many, many hours of research though.

Thanks for the heads-up though Kuya. It is always good to help each other with advice and warnings :like:

Happens all the time, I know a man who used to make a small extra crust from selling items on Ebay. He would inflate the price with a couple of dummy accounts, though if he ended up buying the item himself he was out of cash as Ebay would take 10% of the sale.

Personally, when I buy. I like to watch an item and then within the last 20 seconds I hit it with my maximum bud and see if I win. Basically, I gazump everyone else..Though I do give myself a limit that I do not go over despite bidding wars..

I did exactly that last month, I wanted an upgrade for my T61, my existing T61 did not have a webcam nor an SD card slot and the one I was bidding on had a better processor than my current one as well. I watched the bidding for a long time and this particular device had not attracted any stupid bids so in the last 5 minutes I tested the water, my personal maximum that I would pay was 170 quid, I know what they are worth, so we started from 73 and I bid it up a bit to see what kind of bid increments people were going for, we got to about 125 and with 5 seconds to go I entered my true maximum bid of 170, all the other automatic bids went through (this auction was on 2 pound increments) and I got it for 142 pounds.

Delighted to say the least, I am typing this on that precise laptop, upgraded with the RAM and disk from the old one, my old one had a small scratch barely noticeable on the screen but the new one is absolutely perfect, not bad for 142 quid.

Exactly round about Christmas I bought a server class laptop for 540 quid, given my profession and my dormant business I still need to have the kit that allows me to write the code that might one day make me some dosh, the device I bought would have been over 1500 new albeit a couple of years back, does not mean that it is anything less than marvellous in todays terms.

If you always wait till the last moment you can see whether there has been artificial inflation of the price by someone's mates, ebay are generally aware of this and it can usually be detected in the bid pattern, in the end it always boils down to what you are willing to pay, if you have a clear idea of value then make your personal value bid at the last moment possible and let the computer work it out then.

If you bid too early people will up their maximum bid and the only winner in that scenario is ebay.

Oh, I got two emails from this tool setting himself as Paypal asking me to send the phone to Nigeria.

It is such a shame people still fall for these scams, they are so obvious :erm:

When I was quite new here in UK I buy a lot on eBay which we can't really do in Middle East as eBay don't like to ship on PO Boxes so I enjoy watching and purchasing items on eBay as my past time if I find anything I want. :boing:
Sometimes the items are disappointing as they are not as when they were described but of course using PayPal which is supposed to be the safest way to do, but got hacked by Nigerians as well!
So I got use to paying purchases through PayPal! I made my first advertisement which is a Sony Video camera worth £600 so I advertised it for £350. Bloody Nigerian contacted me and asked for my email so he can send the payment because purchasing it on eBay there would be 10% charges. So I gave my email, PayPal emailed me and say to send the item and provide a tracking number, scan it and email it to him before they can put the money in my account. But of course this is my first item for sale! So I have no idea that the item has to be paid first then send it. PayPal email came and claimed they over charged the arsehole of £150 so in order for them to put the money in my account I have to send this amount via Western Union! I got suspicious this time and search throught the Internet and found out about this arsehole is known to be the #1 scammer! :frust:
So I told him to F*ck off in his next letter claiming I haven't give him the money he overpaid me! He never stop and hassles me on my email so I had to closed down that email! I advertise on Gumtree as well and there he is again asking to buy my item so I played along with him and he contact me everyday and I kept saying I will send it but never did so he got impatient and got nasty so I told him "Moron! You mother f*cker! Do you think you can fool me again???
