Well the past two weeks have been busy on the photography front.

I have bought some Canon things - 7D Camera, EF 24-105mm f/4 L lens, 430EX II flash and also a LowePro fastpack 350 backpack. I bought everything from Jessops but got the online prices for everything saving more than £140 over the shop prices.

The camera and lens combo is a lot bigger and heavier than the Canon 450D and 50mm f1.8 II.

Don't know how I managed without the flash before, especially taking pics of our daughter - it is hard taking photos of moving toddlers.

Thanks to oss for pointing me in the direction of the 24-105 L :like:

The backpack has room for a 17" laptop but doesn't have a "holder" for the manfrotto tripod.
Airlines require the tripod to be check in as baggage now so I will just carry it with me when out for the day.

I decided to go ahead with buying these things as I want to take video/photos of the kids as our second (boy) is due in less than six weeks and I don't want to regret not getting a good camera/lens in a few years when the kids are well past the baby/toddler years.

Now how do all these things work :erm: ;) :)

That's a nice combination Mike, I miss the small form factor of my old 20D but you're right it's a lot bigger than the even smaller 450D, I bet you appreciate the comparatively huge viewfinder on the 7D though :)

One day if they drop in price enough I might buy a 7D second hand, when I bought my 20D in 2004 I too bought in Jessops and they did a good price match to an online dealer in the South of England, I still like Jessops good shop.

As you say when the kids are small you don't want to miss anything, this is one of James when he was 2 years old taken with the 20D and 24-105, my regret is that I have nothing like the quantity of shots of my daughter as I simply have not been able to spend as much time over there as I used to.

Personally I would never carry a tripod that way I think mine does have the tripod carrier but as you say there is no way they would let you on a plane with any decent tripod and I simply would not trust to ever see it again if I put my tripod in the hold.

I made a point of buying a cheap tripod over in the Phils many years ago in order to avoid having to transport my good one, although if I really had to I can just about store the good one in my big case, awkward though and heavy.

A good monopod is another matter the Lowpro bags are quite good for securing one of those.

Not really had a chance to do anything with it than coo at the thing and sniff test it for it's "fresh from the factory" smell. Looking forward to heading out on Sunday with it for some street photography.
