I have been expecting a CHAPS ("same day") payment into my UK bank account for the past 49 hours. it would be petty cash to Tony Blair, but to me it is a lot of money. RBS say they sent it; Barclays say they never got it. The excuses proffered for this state of affairs by both banks would have been amusing, were the amount involved smaller. All of them are inconsistent and boil down to "go away and stop bothering me!" "Security", "Money laundering" "wrong information on the transfer" (it wasn't) and, above all, "you need to talk to the other lot". Now I know I live in a banana republic. We just lack the bananas, the president and the climate.
That is completely out of order Andrew, a CHAPS payment involves phone calls between the banks, it is more or less instantaneous and they charge you a pretty penny for the service, I would always have trusted a CHAPS payment to be made in the allotted timespan, I am quite honestly shocked!
So would -so did - I. I have been given the run-around all day. The sender has emailed me a scan of the RBS remittance advice - timed at 14.13.23 on the 4th (RBS' CHAPS cut off tome is 15.50, according to their website) and, late this afternoon, a copy of the SWIFT message dated 140204. It is precisely correct - but the money is not there.
